1954/55 Proof Sets

7 posts in this topic

I recently got these two sets. I bought them as proof sets but according to my book on Proof Sets this type of packaging wasn't used. Also I have coins from all 3 mints in each set (PDS) and I don't recall that happening except for in Mint Sets. So does anyone know if these pics are of proof sets?

They are US Mint Sets, but it appears that the cents for the 1954 set have been popped out and replaced. The price of an original 1954 US Mint Set exceeds that of the 1954 proof set, but for 1955 there were two types of proof set issued and one of these is worth more than the 1955 US Mint Set.

Now I find myself on the horns of a dilema.... I ordered Proof Sets and apparently got Mint Sets. The weird thing is I cancelled this order back in Feb. and then last week I got an email saying it was being delivered. I can't find any charge on my credit cards for the purchase. I did, however, find the reimbursement when I cancelled my order. So now what to do.... I guess I'll sleep on it. I did eventually want the mint sets down the road and I still want the proof sets... I guess I'll call tomorrow and find out what the company wants to do. That sounds like the right thing to do.

Well, as previously mentioned, those are mint sets and not proof sets. The proof sets of 55 came in two diferent styles. One in the flat pack type of 56 and one type in box in individual cellophane.

Next dilemna, and it seems to be eating at you already. I would return the sets or pay for them. I too am concerned with the cents as they look too red. I was in a similar situation quite some time back. I bought a lot of proof sets from a dealer. Ended up he sold me a 51 PS at the price of a 54 PS because it was in the wrong box and I didn't realize it at first. When I did realize it I was unsure what to do. After a couple of years I ended up shelling out the 400 bux to the dealer to make things right. Don't let that eat at you the way it did me. Up to you though.
