7 digits away from the decimal point is trillion, is it not?

Current Debt Held by the Public as of 04/10/2008

$5,349,601,084,902.75

Public Intragovernmental Holdings

$4,093,106,399,062.99

Total Public Debt Outstanding

$9,442,707,483,965.74

Financing the Debt

Why does the debt sometimes decrease?

The Public Debt Outstanding decreases when there are more redemptions of Treasury securities than there are issues.

How do you make a contribution to reduce the debt? :roflmao:

Make your check payable to the Bureau of the Public Debt, and in the memo section, notate that it is a Gift to reduce the Debt Held by the Public. Mail your check to:

Attn Dept G

Bureau Of the Public Debt

P. O. Box 2188

Parkersburg, WV 26106-2188

I was curious to see just who was behind this "Dept G" :o

No need for you to pay it all. You only need to pay about $30,000 for your part. I wouldn't mind paying that if I didn't think that $25,000 of that was the result of pure waste.

Any one up for some pork chops? Maybe some spare ribs? Or some good Canadian bacon?

7 digits away from the decimal point is trillion, is it not?

No...

4 digits away is thousands:

1,000.

7 digits away is millions:

1,000,000.

10 digits away is billions:

1,000,000,000.

13 digits away is trillions:

1,000,000,000,000.

16 digits away is quadrillions:

1,000,000,000,000,000.

Note that there are differences between those terms when going between long and short scale numbers. I'm referring to the most commonly used (in America) short scale in my notes above. The British used to go by the long scale, but they've since switched to the short scale.

So the Current Debt Held by the Public as of 04/10/2008

$5,349,601,084,902.75

Is 5 trillion, 349 billion, 601 milliion, 84 thousand, 902 dollars and 75 cents.

Yes, these foreign creditors have been cheated through both currency depreciation and buying "investments" such as toxic subprime mortgage debt. They will not be cheated forever because there is a limit to everything. This country better enjoy getting these goods and services for cheap to free while it lasts.

Thanks you Pendragon for the explaination on huge numbers, perhaps one day the debt will reach a google.

1 googol

= 10/100

=10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

If it ever reches a googolplex, that would be the number one followed by one googol zeroes, or ten raised to the power of one googol.

10googol = 10/10/100

Note: In the documentary Cosmos, physicist and broadcast personality Carl Sagan estimated that writing a googolplex in numerals (i.e., "1,000,000,000...") would be physically impossible, since doing so would require more space than the known universe occupies. Now that's a debt!
