Who got the grade right on this Morgan NGC or ANACS?

14 posts in this topic

Looks like it's on the borderline between a high end VG8 and a F12. Resubmit it and it could very easily come back in a NGC F12 holder. I liked it just fine in the old ANACS holder at the F12 grade.

Seems to me you lost the grade due to the wear on the reverse. Boy, there sure are a lot of feathers missing, especially on the eagles right wing tip. (the one he's looking at) Solid rims but lacking device detail got you the downgrade. Too bad.

Who's right is anybodies guess looking at images, this one could go either way. It was up to the grader to go low on the high side (Fine) or to go high on the low side(VG)

You got the high on the low side.

In baseball the tie goes to the runner?

In coin grading, the tie goes to the downgrade. :(

Does NGC recognize this Vam?I would not have sent in as the grading fees in the Economy tier are $16.00 and the Vam Fee is $7.00 so you are talking $23.00 just for the grading.

It is true that you can't use it in a Registry in an ANACS holder but if you spent only $13.00 for the coin then you are talking $40.00 for the coin and the crossover costs. If you paid $20.00 for the coin then you are taling $47.00.

I am reasonably sure that you could have got a better grade in a NGC or PCGS holder for $40.00.

I just recently sent this Morgan in to NGC for crossover so I could use it in my registry set. NGC graded it VG8. Any opinions on who got the grade right?

Man you could have picked up a MS-62 MS-63 on eBay for less than $40.00.

Why did you send this coin into NGC for crossover.

It pays to do alittle research!!

I agree with the VG8 the eagle's wings are wornen down to much!

If you can find him an NGC MS-63 100-O VAM 29A for less than $40 he'd probably be happy to buy it.

I mentioned that I did not know if NGC would label the Vam or not.I am also not familar with the VAM29. I do have several Vams. One of them is a 1878 (reverse of 79) and is an AU58. It is also a VAM 222. NGC will only label the Hot 50 and Top100 Vams. Therefore I had ANACS put it in their holder for the Vam.

I have a 1901 O MS 65 and based the price on it for the 1901 0. My apologies if the Vam warrants that price.

If that is the case then all the more reason to keep it in the ANACS Holder.I may have Vams on some of my NGC Morgans but I havent checked them all.

If the Vam is that valuable then I would not put it in an NGC Holder if they did not recognize and label it.

If he wants it for the Registry and NGC only slabs it with the F-12 GRADE then he will only get points for a non vam 1901 0 in F-12

If this particular VAM increases the value of that coin by a good amount and NGC will not slab it with the VAM then why not keep it in the same ANACS holder with the designated Vam for the resell value and purchase a better grade 1901-0 for about $40.00 for the Registry since he stated that "he slabbed it with NGC for the Registry.".

I finally got a chance to look it up. I did make a mistake in that somehow I mentioned a 1901-0

The facts are still the same as far as research. I checked ann Numismedia has a 1900-0 as a top 100 so the label would be valid for the Vam.

The problem is that Numismedia has a 1900-0 with that Vam in Fair condition as being worth $18.40 and a VG as being worth $17.25. So why would anybody want to spend $23.00 to grade a coin that was worth only $18.40?

Numismedia gives a value of $37.20 to a MS62 FOR A 1900-0 for this coin and this Vam.

So again I would have to ask the question that if somebody wanted this coin for a Registry then why not get one on EBAY for $40.00 which in this case would be at least a MS62 or better.
