This reminds me of the stories my Dad would tell me about the Depression era. My grandparents emigrated from Czechoslovakia around the turn-of-the-century. Their passage was paid by one of the "money barons", and after processing at Ellis Island, they were put on a train heading west through Pennsylvania. Some were told to get off where they would work in the oil fields. Others worked on the railroads or in the steel mills. My grandfather ended up working in a coal mine in southwest PA. They were never paid cash for their backbreaking labor. They were provided a roof over their heads, and they were given scrip which could only be used at "The Company Store".
