What are the approximate values of those coins, relative to the grading fees? Thanks.

Probably about the same ratio as the value of Ant's ebay coins relative to the shipping fees. lol

Sorry to pick on you Ant, but I was just reading your thread and noticed the similarities. :foryou:

In answer to mark felds question i have used NGC's values if anyone can be bothered it would be interesting to see what PGCS prices are like in comparison

Coin 1

1974 D Cent MS 66 RD No price for MS 66 at NGC but have sold for $30+ in heritage auctions

Coin 2

1989 S Cent PF 69 RD Ultra Cameo $17.50 NGC

Coin 3

1994 S Cent PF 69 RD Ultra Cameo $21.25 NGC

Coin 4

1981 Five Cents PF 69 $20.00 NGC

Coin 5

1984 P Five Cents MS 64 5FS No price NGC for 5FS

Coin 6

1989 S Five Cents PF 69 Ultra Cameo $21.25 NGC

Coin 7

1994 S Five cents PF 69 Ultra Cameo $18.75 NGC

Coin 8

1964 Dime PF 67 $13.75 NGC

Coin 9

1994 S Dime PF 69 Ultra Cameo $18.75 NGC

Coin 10

1969 S Quarter Dollar PF 67 $17.25 NGC

Coin 11

1971 D Quarter Dollar MS 66 $20.00 NGC

Coin 12

1981 S Quarter Dollar PF 69 Ultra Cameo $21.25 NGC

Coin 13

1989 S Quarter Dollar PF 69 Ultra Cameo $20.00 NGC

Coin 14

1994 S Quarter Dollar PF 69 Ultra Cameo $28.75 NGC

Coin 15

1989 S Half Dollar PF 69 Ultra Cameo $31.35 NGC

Coin 16

1981 S Dollar PF 69 Ultra Cameo $26.25 NGC

So that's $326.10 and one NP so lets say $330.00 to simplify

and modern NGC grading is 12.50 x 16 = $200

so that's about $130 over the grading

I don't know how to work out the % but it seems OK to me and if i had hit just one 70 how different it would have been

+ of course you cannot take into the equation the fun i had sorting through the coins and the anticipation of the grading :applause:

Cost (excluding postage) of getting coins graded - $200

Possible retail value of coins - $330

Fun in sorting through the coins (and satisfaction in spelling Mark Feld's last name correctly in the future) - "priceless".

:)

Not to be a wet blanket, but in the interest of fairness, regarding the above, many of these coins can be picked off of eBay for much, much less than the quoted 'values'.

Pat, what's wrong with being a "wet blanket" if you are providing good information? ;) I didn't/don't know if the grades justified the fees or not in this particular case, only that I see a multitude of people seemingly throwing money away on grading fees.

Throwing money away grading coins ???

Interesting hm

How's about this scenario!!!

WHAT IF all the coins i had sent in which got a 69 had hit the magic 70 would that have been a waste of $'s ?

1981 dollar $250.00

1989 1/2 Dollar $281.25

1994 1/4 Dollar $120.00

1989 1/4 Dollar $162.50

1981 1/4 Dollar $150.00

1994 Dime $87.50

1994 5 Cents $137.50

1989 5 cents $243.75

1981 5 Cents $910.00 for UC no price for no UC

1994 Cent $250.00

1989 Cent $375.00

so that would be $2,967.50 Lets call it $3,000.00 with the other coins to keep it simple

for a $200 grading fee without postage

so that would be $2,800.00 over the fee

Would that have been throwing money away on grading fees ?

I am not having a pop Mark i am just trying to say without speculation there is no accumulation..

and hay you never know one day even i may have a subbmition like this because who thaught i could ever pick 69 grades out .. but i did lol

Please re-read my previous post - I didn't say YOU were necessarily throwing money away on grading. However, the fact that your coins MIGHT have come back as 70's, in which case you MIGHT have made a lot of money, doesn't fully address the issue.

They MIGHT have come back with lower grades, too. And yes, I understand that there is more to gain by higher grades than there is to lose by lower ones. But the chances of the higher grades are much less too, so that should also be factored in. All other things aside, though, if you're having fun and don't mind spending the money, enjoy!

Cheers Mark as i said in my last post i was not having a pop at you ! i was just commenting on the last couple of posts.. as for making a bit of money well i would not have sold them as its the points i would have loved for my registry God knows i need some lol

also in response to the lesser chance of the higher grades that was taken into consideration when i researched the coins before sending them as these dates have quite a high number of 70's already graded so on the law of averages i hoped to possibly hit one .

thanks for the comments always gladly received

PS.. have you never fancied spending some time having a look through a lot of modern proof sets at a show and banging a MS 70 in just for the hell of it .. with your credentials as an ex grader you would be way better at it than myself

all the best dooly (the daft englishman )

No, I haven't, as, even if it could be profitable, I prefer not to go (more) insane. :D

Mark is fully correct if you look at the matter as black and white and only in a technical sense.

However, Dooly is fully correct if you consider only the artistic merits of the act. He's gotten full satisfaction from the searching, the submission and the satisfaction of being proven right in his selection of coins to be graded.

You are correct in the anticipation of the grading etc. Especially on the receipt of the 70. I can remember when I sent my Reverse Proof in and thought it would be a PF69 and it turned out to be a PF70.

I have received my grades on a recent submission but haven't got the coins back yet. I sent in the Bald Eagle Commemoratives I just got purchased from the U.S. Mint and another that I still had that I purchased from the U.S.Mint in 2006.Here are the results on them.

1. 2008 Bald Eagle PF69

2. 2008 Bald Eagle MS70

3. Ben Franklin Scientist PF70

Numismedia has the Ben Franklin at $200.00. I expected the Ben Franlin to be PF69 . I also had a Library of Congress that I expected to be a PF69 and that is what it graded.I had a 1965 Kennedy that graded lower than I thought but all in all the value of all the other grades way compensated fot it.

I agree. There are many times that one can pick up a coin on Ebay fro less than the value. I picked up a coin on E Bay earlier this month that Numismedia has for $200.00 I picked it up for $81.00 in an NGC Holder.

I have also seen Coins where the Bids were more than the stated Value and I have also seen Bids that were more than the you could buy the same exact coin in a BIN.

Is the Seller that didn't put a reserve on the one that sold for $81.00 wrong? If he bought it raw for $29.99 and paid $12.50 to have it graded or a total of $42.49 and received $81.00 and he is happy then is it a "wet blanket?' I don't know if he was aware of the NUmismedia valuation or not but if both the Buyer and Seller are pleased then I woud think that it was a good transaction. If a submission results in a bigger total value than the expenses even if it is a small increment and the submitter has no intention of selling then it is for the enjoyment of the coin.

If one of the coind turned out to be a 70 as he stated then it is even more of a thrill.

I agree with Victor who seems to be agreeing with everyone else all at the same time. This is an agreeable thread.

Dooly is spending his money as much on education and entertainment as anything.
