Help needed- 1964-D Kennedy Half- Which TDO or DDO is it?

9 posts in this topic

I cherrypicked 4 of these yesterday...It doesn't seem to match any of the ones in the CPG. I own an example of TDO FS-013.5 and it definitely isn't that one. It does look tripled to me, though. Any Kennedy specialists out there that know which variety this is?

cmerlo if you keep showing off your finds, dealers are going to ban you from sitting at their tables!

All kidding aside, do you find that dealers get apprehensive when you look so closely at a coin and decide to buy?

I've only ever had problems with dealers twice, at shows. In both cases, I was asked if I was cherrypicking, and I said yes. They then asked me to leave their table, which I did, and spent my money elsewhere.

I look at cherrypicking as a win/win situation for both the buyer and seller. The seller makes a profit on the coin they are selling, and the cherrypicker makes a profit on the coin they buy.

The B&M I bought this from doesn't mind me looking at their coins at all; in fact, sometimes they'll set coins aside for me that they think are varieties.

The next time a dealer at a show asks you that, tell him, "No, I just want to make sure the coin hasn't been improperly cleaned."

The only other 64-D tripled obverse that I have listed in Flynn and Wexler's "Treasure Hunting Franklin and Kennedy Half Doubled Dies" is their DDO-005, listed by Coneca as 5-O-II, and the Cherrypicker as FS-013.6. I'm not convinced this is what you have, though, the pictures don't really seem like a good fit. It looks like a pretty early die state, so look for a heavy die scratch at his lips, and a die gouge that connects NI of UNITED.

Or, if there is a Strong die gouge across upper B of LIBERTY, then it is Coneca's 16-O-II-C.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help...I'm not seeing any gouges. 2 of the coins are in the MS-65-66 range, and I might include them on my next ICG submission, for Mike Ellis to look at...they don't really fit any of the pics in the CPG. Ron Pope suggested ATS that they were FS-013.5, but I have one of those certified and the tripling is nowhere near as strong on these coins, especially on 'In God', where it's very faint.

That may cause more problems than telling him I'm cherrypicking! :D
