I like the eveness on the 8 Reales, but to be honest the reflections in the proof are a little distracting.

the 8 reales is very nice.....I actually darken my proof pics and slightly angle the coin so the camera image isn't reflected.....afterwards I add back the light for proofs by using a combo of contrast and gamma in photoshop.....I have a $50 camera and a circular halogen magnifier/light and that's it..

Ant,

You're starting to get the right idea about lighting proofs, but you're shooting too close to the coin, thereby getting reflections of the camera in the fields. Shoot from farther away and keep playing with the light. In the end, you've got to work with what equipment you've got.

I'm not sure what Canon you are using (I can see the brand but not the model in the reflection), but I'm using a Olympus E300 with the cheapo 14-45 kit lens. Set at 45mm and using close focus I am about 14-16" away from the coin. Even after sizing it down to 480x480 I wind up with plenty of detail:

I'm still trying to figure out lighting on proofs also, just takes time and learning from some of the setups the experts use. I'm using a 2 light setup with daylight balanced florescent bulds, one as close to the lens as possible and one about 30 degrees to the right and 2x the distance. Still playing to optimize it.

but close up is only way to get detail,if i gfet to far it doesnt show right. how do i meet in middle?

If that's the case, then I'd say you're being limited by your equipment. If you've got a digital SLR (with interchangable lenses) you can upgrade to a larger lens, but if you have a fixed lens camera, you're probably stuck where you're at.

The S5 is supposed to have a pretty good zoom capability, I'd try setting the zoom at about the mid point and back off 12-16" from the coin. If need be then you can use the zoom and keep the distance the same.
