Nearly OT factoid I learned about Abraham Lincoln (the guy on the cent)

Most 19th century men who practiced professions like law never attended law school. They studied with a lawyer, read the books and then took whatever examinations that were required to practice. Sometimes the exam was no more than oral conversation with a judge. Going to school to practice law became common place in the 20th century.

Lincoln had no more several months or so in a classroom. He mostly educated himself.

Virginia still permits that, and some of the best practical lawers I know followed that path.

Even more OT - for a great movie on the beginning of Lincoln's law career, see John Ford's 1939 Masterpiece "Young Mr. Lincoln," starring Henry Fonda. Not entirely sure how factual it is, but the movie is simply incredible.
