Here's my order history with the mint. Notice how the orders have decreased over time as I've veered away from modern mint products. My latest order was for all of the newest commems to keep my collection up to date. One of my first orders was the 2002 proof platinum sets for $1300. Reckon that that was the good ol' days.

the same...I usually only buy something that really strikes me..I don't collect moderns

besides-the mint charges $40 for the Jamestown commem for example... plus NGC $30 for earlybird submission grading ($70 total)--I bought my Jamestown PF70UCAM on ebay for $45...go figure..and slabbed PF69's sell for less than the mint charges in the first place for most issues...

Part of the problem is the economics of your submission method:

$30 for EarlyBird? I'm not quite sure why people use it for the bulk of modern coins. I mean even Gold Bullion at today's prices can be submitted under the Modern Tier, it goes by year of issue, not by value.

When you read the price chart:

1. It costs more per coin $30 vs. $15 for Modern Special (say an Early Release or even a special label like a First Year of Issue) or a just plain Modern Tier $12.50

2. EarlyBird turnaround times are almost always consistently at a slower turnaround time than either Modern Special or Modern Tier turnarounds (it's right on the chart from NGC). So, you pay more, and get slower service from NGC. This makes it desirable... how?

Sure, the catch is that you must submit 5 coins, minimum under either the Modern Tier for example, but let's examine the math.

Modern Tier is $12.50. Collectors Society members (or even eBay members) can get a 10% discount to $11.25 per coin. 5 coins at $11.25 = $56.25 - not even the cost of TWO coins under EarlyBird (granted, without the 10% discount, so FIVE coins at Modern Tier for just $2.25 more than TWO coins at the EarlyBird tier, assuming the same 10% discount).

EarlyBird turnaround time slower. Modern turnaround time is faster.

I think you know which I'd choose.

Lastly as for your your PF70UC Jamestown on eBay for $45 -- can I have that seller's name? I want a few of those!

I've gotten a few Jamestowns on eBay "on the cheap" -- but not THAT cheap (email me privately, I'd hate to miss out on that bargain!). Congrats to you though! :golfclap:

I continue to buy the proof, silver proof, and mint sets from the US Mint. I also buy the First Day Covers. I've bought the American Silver Eagles (proof and burnished) and the 24-karat gold proof Buffaloes from the past two years. I am not a fan of the medals, commems, or the multitude of Prez Dollar options. The only difference between this year and previous years is that I wait to order so that I would pay for postage once.

I keep up with the modern commemorative coins, which might be a mistake. But at least I enjoy them. I used to buy Proof sets every year for the business, but I've consistently lost money on those for the past three years. And to rub salt in the wound, the "customer service" at the mint often sent me at least one set that was so ugly I had to waste money sending it back. Now I'm not sure if I will even order one clad Proof set and one silver set from the mint. I might just buy them at the coin shows.
