1804 cent color alteration

2 posts in this topic

Is their anything that can be done to restore/conserve this cent? It appears it has been cleaned and recolored-at least that is what I am being told. It is too beautiful to just throw in a drawer. Can it be graded after conservation?

Thank you for your time.

Jim

It does appear from your image that this coin had its color altered in some fashion. Altered toning is usually performed to hide a problem on a coin and in many cases that problem is something that will also prevent the coin from grading with NGC such as an improper cleaning. Altered color on a copper coin sometimes is also the result in an attempt to hide further problems. There is a chance that conservation could help this coin though that could make further problems more apperant. Copper is also the most reactive of the typical coin metals so there is a chance that conservation would not be able to safely "unalter" the color. Bottom line is this coin would need to be inspected in person to determine what exactly might be done to help the color.
