This ANACS AU-55 cleaned seated 1865 $ has a motto. Someone in the thread suggests that it is a proof with the motto added. But proof 1865 seateds do not have a motto.

Can anyone here shed some light???

BTW: It hammered at $5000 this go around. Someone bought the same coin 1 year ago at FUN for $1600.

Heritage has made no mention of the coin's motto in either case. And ANACS had not noticed anything unusual about this coin either.

Thanks! Just the person that I wanted to hear from. Was just curious. And even more curious as to why ANACS and Heritage both failed to make note of it.

It's a fantasy piece created for collectors in the 1870's. There's quite a few dated 1863, 64 & 65.

(thumbs u

i got printed matter from the later 19th century on it

I certainly can't answer that one!

i can answer it........... somebody missed it and with human nature being what it is usually when you are looking at something and not looking for it and it is in plain site it is totally invisible

one of my laws of nature as since everyone assumes it has no motto then why bother looking for it you are looking at it but not seeing it

in other words an optical dillusion

congrats the the winner (thumbs u

does this mean that if I buy one now at $5,000.00, I'll be able to sell it in one year for $20,000.00 ???

Probably for the same reason why neither Superior or NGC noticed the missing motto on an 1866 proof quarter that Superior purchased over the counter. It was one of the stolen and missing Dupont coins.

And I have pictures of another Heritage sale lot in a PCGS slab, a very nice MS-63 1859 indian head cent that went for $200. Yep nice 1859 cent with an oak leaf wreath with a shield up at the top.
