Metal Detecting: 1914 Wheat Penny

1 post in this topic

Two places in "This Old Town" are being razed. I was given the chance to do a tad bit of metal detecting at one of the sites. I found a great deal of old nails, chunks of cast iron? possibly from pipes? I was finding all types of junk but no coins... finally I found a round shaped item, the size of a penny. I rinsed it with some mild soap, no good, soaked it in acetone over night, used a tooth pick to remove some of the crud and after a bit of work, I could finally make out the date "1914", I do not believe it has a mint mark but I'm still soaking it. I will try to post a scan if it will come out but I'm a bit doubtful.

If I get the chance, I'd like to go to the site again but next time I want to adjust the settings a bit so I don't get all the junk.
