9 posts in this topic

1. Of the years 1792-1807, which year has the most number of varieties total covering all series of regular U.S. coinage?

2. How many varieties (as per Overton) are there of the Draped Bust Small Eagle halves?

3. How many varieties (as per Logan-McClosky) are there of the 1802-dated half dimes?

4. Which 1803 dollar variety (BB or Bol) is easily identified by having its reverse rotated slightly (about 30 degrees)?

Prize: satisfaction.

For #1, the answer is 1796. That's why Mr. 1796 chose that date to study -- because it was the more interesting of the early years of our federal coinage.

For #3, there is only one die marriage.

For #4, the answer is BB-255, which is also the lone representative of the ``Large 3'' Red Book variety.

Without actually looking I would say #1 is probably 1794. There are 67 varieties of cents alone (plus two subvarieties) then there are a fair number of varieties of half dollars as well and nine varieties of half cent (plus either four or six subvarieties here as well.). The only year that could come close is 1798 with 46 cents and I don't know how many dollars, but no half cent or half dollar varieties.
