Are these the "same different" coins?

15 posts in this topic

Well, yes............................and no. Here are two 1888 Morgans. One, I've had for nearly two years, and the other I won in the Scotsman auction this past October.

Can anyone spot the "same differences"?

Okay, I'll admit that I was holding a card up my sleeve and wasn't being totally fair. The first pair of photos are in an ANACS holder and the second pair are in an NGC holder. Here are four more photos. Again, nos. 1 & 2 are the ANACS coin and nos. 3 & 4 are the NGC coin.

That's part of it. Both are VAM11A, Top 100, but the ANACS specimen is a later die state (as compared to the NGC specimen) and the clash is beginning to disappear. You can't even see the clashed "n".

But, there is more and I will show you the photos when I get home.

Yeah, both ANACS and NGC missed the attribution. Though I have to give NGC the benefit of the doubt because it is possible that the submitter either missed it or didn't bother to request the variety service. But, I don't know enough about ANACS' submission procedures to make that assumption.

There seems to be a difference in distance/rotation (slight) as the up feather on 2nd obverso--1st pic set , seems to be up and more to left of bottom R (even slightly past) while the 1st pic , feather seems more centered under R.

Also the "Spike" on bottom lip seems more defined/pronounced on second obv.

Not an expert but last 2/12 yrs finding varieties on Morgans has me a little woozy-eyed!

Hope I'm seeing right! Tom

Tom, I'm afraid that you have me a little confused. Up feather? Bottom R? I don't follow you. Maybr it's because I just got home from work and it is late.

The die rotation on both coins is the same........about 5 degrees. The clash on the NGC coin (2nd set of photos) is better defined because it is an earlier die state. Clashes will gradually fade as the die continues to be used.
