1889 Morgan, VAM11a, Top 100

Even though I was a little disappointed that I lost out on my "most wanted" selection in the Scotsman auction, this is one that I did win. It was paired with an 1889 Morgan that has an interesting strikethrough, but I will get to that one in another thread.

I believe that this is an LDS, because there aren't too many remnants of the clashes remaining that you would expect to see. The "n" in IGWT is still visible on the obverse along with some of the clashing around her mouth, but most of the reverse clashes that you would expect to see have just about vanished from continued striking. I believe that this is probably a very late die state because of two, obverse die gouges that are visible on her lower lip and chin. These are not mentioned in the VAMWORLD (Yes, I capitalized all of it!) description of the 11a, so I can only assume that the gouges occurred sometime afterward.

Actually, I was surprised that I won this lot for so little. This one coin is worth more than what I paid for the pair. I will definitely be resubmitting this one to NGC, and you will understand why after you have looked at all of the photos.
