Yes, very impressive. It is amazing that these ultra rare coins are now being turned over every 2-3 years from purchase and bring record prices every time.

p.s. Welcome to the boards!! :hi:

Rumors have it that that $1.6 million magically turns into $6.1 with a double CAC sticker !
Some coins have more than doubled moving from one brand of plastic to another! No sticker needed :o

The reported mintage for the 1894-S dime is 24. About a dozen pieces are known today ranging in grade from Good-4 to this piece in Proof-66. The low grade piece was purchased over counter at Gimbels department store in New York City in the early 1960s. The price paid was reportedly $2,000.

The price for this piece actually sounds a little low given the grand scheme of things. This example is supposed to be finest known, and the population is only about a dozen pieces.

The example that was linked was a Proof 64, not the Proof 66 which sold earlier this year (for 1.85 million?).

Sounds about right on the PF66 price.
