ARE THESE 4 BUFFALOS A NEW VARIETY?

11 posts in this topic

No.

A variety is a die characteristic. What you have is an error - it appears to be a strike through grease. These are very common and not worth much of any premium. A blob of grease can get stuck on the die and strike a similar pattern on numerous coins in a row.

Well if that is what it is, and both you and Ken potter agree, then the answer is no it is not a new variety, just a die with some die polish lines. Most dies acquire some die polish lines during their lifetimes that doen't make them a "variety". Ok, I will admit that taken to its extreme EVERY die pair is a different variety, but 99.999% of them are not significant. I would put these coins in that catagory. Why, because that coin may have struck coins before it was polished, and after little wear the polish lines may have faded away again. So the polish lines do not identify a variety, but merely a die stage of that die, and it is quite possible that more than one die may have similar polish lines.

How do we know it is not a "Die Gouge" as the polish mark is not the same depth through out the flawed area? It is deeper at one end then it is at the other end.
