I have a collection of the ANA Convention 3-medal sets that were produced from 1969 to 1982. Each set contains one silver and one bronze in 38mm and a 19mm bronze. It didn't take me very long to accumulate 13 of the 14 sets, but I have been unable to find the 1981 set for the New Orleans, LA convention. I've been looking for it for more than two years with no luck at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried contacting the ANA? They might have spares (unlikely), duplicates that they want to get rid of (unlikely, but possible), or be able to tell you who might have some (more likely).

Sorry, Chris, can't help you, but show us some pics, I've not seen those medals I don't believe.

The sets I have for 1969-1980 came in Capital holders. Some of the medals were a tad loose so I took them out of the holders. Since the medals were thicker than normal coins, I mounted them in 2x2's and mounted those in 2-1/2x2-1/2's for a little more protection. The 1982 set came in a nice presentation case. I wish that I had a case like this for each set.

I rushed taking these photos, and I had to improvise a display stand to shoot each set. Unfortunately, the bronze medals came out a little dark. They show what the reverse of each (silver) medal would look like. Let me know if there are any reverses you want me to retake for better detail.

By the way, I asked NGC some time ago if I could submit these for grading and encapsulation. I think they would look fantastic in the multiholder. Unfortunately, they won't accept ANA medals. I wonder if ICG has a multiholder?

Chris,

This certainly must be an elusive medal. The one above is the only one I too ran across. Hard to believe with the wonders of the internet that one can not be located. I did quite a bit of searching myself. Best of luck to you, and hopefully your two year search will end soon.

Thanks for the thought, Mike, but I'm only interested in the 3-medal sets. It's interesting that this 1948 medal is not listed in my reference material. If the ANA decided not to issue a medal that year, maybe one of the members had it produced.

A minor correction . . . the 1981 convention was in New Orleans . . . my first one. 1982 was Boston.

They only made 350 of the 1981 sets, and they are in a presentation case similar (I guess) to the 1982 set. Actually, I was a little surprised that I was able to get the others as quickly as I did, but I had a little help from three of the members, here.

The first one that I found on eBay was the 1969 Philadelphia set. While the auction was still running, I posted info about it on the boards, and I made it known that I wanted it. It turned out that Hoot was interested in it, too, after reading my post. He put a snipe on it and beat me out of my $150 bid. Some of the members had been following the auction, and they were a little resentful that Hoot hadn't played fairly. It didn't bother me, and I reminded everyone that if I had wanted it that badly, I should have bid higher. Actually, I have Hoot to thank for making it easier to accumulate most of my sets.

I think that other sellers saw the high bids on this auction, and more of the ANA sets began to surface. Within a week, another 1969 set appeared. This time I was prepared to bid even higher, but when the auction ended, I won it for about $50. So you see, Hoot helped me save $100!

Then, another seller listed some of the other sets. One of them was the 1980 Cincinnati, but my good buddy Victor (EZ, here on the boards) said that he really liked it. So, I didn't bid on it and Victor won the auction. If my memory serves me correctly, the other sets averaged $40 each and I won all of them.

Later on, the 1978 Houston set surfaced, and I placed a fairly aggressive bid on it to ensure that I would win. For some strange reason, the auction was pulled even though there were already bids placed. I didn't discover the reason until a short while later. Apparently, Hayden Tubbs knew the seller, and he got him to pull the auction and sell it to him. Good ole "Tubby" sent it to me as an early Christmas present. And later on, Victor sent me the 1980 Cincinnati as a birthday gift.

Thanks, Hoot! Thanks, Hayden! Thanks, Victor............you nomadic bum you!

PS. Rey, did you check out that set of medals about the railroads? I think it was a 26- or 29-medal set on railroad history. I don't think there were pictures of any of the medals on that site, but did you ask the seller for photos?

Oops! Original post corrected.

Thanks, David! Do you have any influence at NGC so that I can get them in the multiholder?

I asked our token and medal guru, and he said no. :(

I'm really trying hard to think of new ways to spend my money at NGC, but you are making it very difficult.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR U!
