Name the first 25 states - have you learned from the state quarters?

24 posts in this topic

Okay, so the mint and many coin collectors all say that the state quarter program is supposed to help people learn more about the states. Let's see if it did. The challenge: post the names of the first 25 states - just half of the US! - in order of their entrance into the union. Don't be a prat and look it up - see if you really know it. I'll give you a hint - the first 13 states were the original 13 colonies.

Ok... ok... without looking:

Delaware

Pennsylvania

New Jersey

Georgia

Connecticut

Massachusetts

Maryland

South Carolina

New Hampshire

Virginia

New York

North Carolina

Rhode Island

Vermont

Kentucky

Tennessee

Ohio

Louisiana

Indiana

Mississippi

Illinois

Alabama

Maine

Missouri

Arkansas

I think the last four are in the right order, but I forgot. I thought Florida was before Arkansas, but I flipped a coin and Arkansas won!

BTW... I had to remember this 100 years ago, in high school!!

Lucky flip...Florida wasn't for another couple of years after Arkansas. Michigan came in between the two.

I had to learn them too. :frustrated:

I know all 50 and I know where Tennessee is. That's why I'm still looking for a 1797 16 star half dime, dime, or quarter.

Naming the states in order of acceptance into the Union is kind of frivolous exercise IMO. There's not much of modern value to be gained from it.

Just getting people to be able to name all the states and point to them on a map is challenging enough, and useful in the modern world. I remember one TV show where they interviewed people off the street and many people couldn't even name the states that shared borders with theirs. Made me feel good about our education system ;)

You don't want to read the book "Miseducation of America" then. It'll really make you not feel good...

I don't think the order is relevant, either. Except for maybe the first 13. Or 16 to include my beloved Tennessee. Being able to name and locate all of them is more useful.
