  1. Here the second coin I found at the FUN for me. It is an 1853 with arrows and rays quarter. The coin is very conservatively graded by NGC as an MS-61. NGC could have easily given it another point. I had to pay the MS-62 price anyway.

I had been looking for a higher grade one, but this fit the slot just fine for a grand less than the cost of an MS-63 and more than a couple grand less than an MS-64.

The mintage was very high on these coins, the mint pushed the dies beyond their limits and did not stop to re-polish them often enough. As a reasult many of these coins have indifferent luster and weak strikes. This coin is very well struck for the type. The only real negative to it is that it has been dipped, but when you buy an MS-61, that comes with the territory.

This type is very hard to find in Mint State. Even AU coins are scarce. But given the high mintage, circualated examples are common, at least for a Seated Quarter.

Old dipping or not, it looks like a nice coin to me. I was trying to figure out which OBV and REV your coin is but gave up. I believe there were 119 OBV dies and 120 REV dies used for the arrowed '53-P quarter.

  2. Well I went to a show today in San Antonio in hopes of being able to upgrade my 1853 circ set or maybe my toned early commem. I wasn't succesful so instead of leaving empty handed, I picked up the 2 coin constitution set just to have something. I was pleasantly surprised at the gold coin as it looks very nice. The design on these (even if they are modern) are still pretty cool imo...

  4. Skyman-

The '26-S might be the highest mintage of the series if I remember right. I think there was something like 80k of them distributed.

They are readily availble. I was trying to find "any" Oregon" with toning that matched my other early commems.

So because of the high mintage and the sellers poor pics on ebay, I actually bought the coin at a pretty low price for what it is.

    Thanks,

  5. Looks like a colorful Jefferson and loads of frost on those Washingtons !!!

This arrived today to join my early commem set... I'm a little miffed I couldn't get the actually colors to show better in the pics as there are a lot of vibrant things going on. I'm just not sure how to set the camera. These are just shot and cropped from straight on. I really like the coin in hand.

  6. DJ, that's a real nice looking 63!... it certainly has appeal better than the grade. :applause:

TR, cool '53 gold! (thumbs u Just for interests sakes, are you buying your 1853 coins in AU53 or was that an interesting coincidence?

Saen, nice toner ASE. (thumbs u

Count, good looking mini-herd of Buffs, and good looking Great White Father to go with them. (thumbs u

More great looking stuff... if I hang around with you all too much I'll go broke.

On the '53 in AU53... just a coincidence. My set runs from VF to Au58 so far. I'm slowly doing upgrades as I'd like to have the minimum for the set to be at least a real nice XF.

  7. Sweet looking Lincoln and Ike !

Tom - When I said tide me over, I didn't mean to imply that the $20 gold was an insignificant purchase for me. In fact, it is one of the more expensive coins I've ever bought (I'm not a big money player). That said though, the $20 gold in AU for that year is available; much more available than the '53 no arrows quarter. I had saved up some money to get the quarter and took a shot at a cleaned one that was in the recent HA sale. My bid fell short so instead I decided to put the money into the $20 gold.

My 1853 set is still coming along pretty good, and hopefully some day I can complete it. It is a much more difficult task than I anticipated when I started.

    Thanks for the comments everyone.
