Hey OP, go on the PCGS forum and ask if they can allow NGC coins into their registry.

A question I frequently wonder about.  Before they let the US coins back in, oh the angst.  I was like PCGS was selling kittens and not puppies.  NGC was selling puppies and kittens.  Then one day NGC decided to only sell puppies after all.  And the outrage over it was immense.  It's not like they were drowning kittens, just not selling them.  And NO ONE ever complained about PCGS only selling kittens.  Only NGC deciding to only sell puppies.  One could still buy both.

I started my registry stuff after the PCGS coins were removed from the world side, so I didn't feel the pain.  They really do things differently with grading (at least with what I collect), so I'm kind wishing they wouldn't do that.  I was a bit surprised about them letting PCGS back in on the US side, but once the whole ANA registry became apparent I understood what might have driven that sudden decision.

Ngc should allow pcgs world coins into the registry . The ngc custom set on another platform is ridiculous. I have 2 of the best Oceania coins in existence . They are pcgs and will remain as such . I would love to use them .

Agree the out of date Collector's Society platform is...suboptimal.  That said, NGC spent a crapton of money on a software upgrade and ended up suing the company for failure to perform or something along those lines (I don't know the status of the suit).  I'm going with, the custom/final upgrades were part of the casualties there.

I have quite a few custom sets (most are obscured as they are for my own amusement) but they are still fun to put together, and I do think they will eventually get the upgrade treatment.  Hopefully.  I have one set in dreadful need of updating but I keep hesitating waiting to see if the upgrade happens.

I'm curious, what are your two Oceania coins?  I went crazy awhile back going for the French overseas territories and have a few of them.

  2. I remember you posting before.  Sounds like you have been putting in a fair amount of work.

As a fairly country-centric collector I'd love to see what you have from Japan and Albania.  Especially Albania as my last few 'want' coins are either gold, or a few base metal ones that have been harder to locate.  But that is my selfishness talking.

Now, you may not want to piecemeal it out to random people on the internet.  But, going to a dealer you have to factor in the work load they are looking at as well as the liquidity risk.  Tying up assets in a huge lot might be more than they are in the mood for in when looking at a risk/return/workload perspective.  20% seems weak, but as you are aware catalog values might not be reflective of reality and they may not think the value is worth the time it would take.  Just speculating though.  And being dismissive can be a negotiating tool, or just a poor personality.  Or, the collection might be nice, but just not for them.  Politeness would be nice though.  I hope it wasn't either of the two I recommended to you!

Considering how much work/sunk cost of effort you have put into this cataloguing, if you really want to take it to the next step you could dip your toes in the eBay waters.  It would be more work and there is risk, and maybe you'd clear 40% of what you are thinking.  And really, considering how much time you have spent, are you over it and want to be done?  Or, are you into it enough to keep plugging away?

What would I do? The $100+ coins I'd think about doing an economy version of slabbing and prefer NGC.  I'd start with a BST here and see what sells.  Start with the price you think they are worth and be prepared for lower offers.  Take what seems reasonable.  Batch the lower value coins by country and sell in lots perhaps.  But raw coins from an unknown person will be a tough sell.  So, move whatever doesn't sell to either GC ($100+ coins in slabs) and the rest on eBay.

As for world events though, not sure if this is a great time to be selling anything other than bullion.

So what kind of Albanian coins do you have :D?

    Hello,

Thank you for the request.  Our Senior team has determined this set structure does not meet the minimum requirements for a competitive NGC Registry set.

I'm genuinely curious, what are the minimum requirements (knowing that guidelines are only that)?  I've been noodling around some ideas in my own favorite areas, but some of the 'series' are very short lived (like maybe two or three years), but are still an important part of an overall coinage of a particular country.

Also, I'm beginning to dismantle a few of my Britannia sets.  The registry is currently set up by denomination for these.  Any chance there could be year sets in addition to the denomination sets?

I'm not likely to ever get rid of my 1997 set for example, and it would be nice to have that as an official registry without having to have a one coin in 4 different sets.  In my case it's more natural to collect by year, not by denomination, which makes me want to see the registry offered that way too :).  I do have the custom set already, but 'official' would be nice too.  https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=18261

If you read the press release the ANA will only be US coins so all those issues with how world coins are cataloged are a non factor.  If at some time in the future world coins do get added then I'm sure the rules of what is allowed will follow how NGC catalogs world coins as it would be their database that would be supplying the data.  The registry is being developed and paid for by NGC so I'm betting that the ANA has less to say about the rules than NGC so I expect that it will closely mirror what we see here now.

Well, poop.  I totally missed that teeny tiny detail :roflmao:

And here I've been wondering away.  Oh well, no ANA sets for me I guess!  At least none that matter.  I think my Saints are ranked something like #42.

  5. I wonder how things will be handled where there is a discrepancy in how NGC and PCGS utilize cataloging.  For Japanese coins PCGS has moved to using the JNDA, but there are tons of slabs without certain designations vs. NGC that follows Krause and is missing (and has at least one non-existent) variety.  On a simple level for example, there are three 'types' for a Japanese 1 yen in 1870.  For type 1 though, there are two varieties noted in JNDA and on the newer PCGS slabs.  Krause only recognizes 1,2,3.  So, would the ANA set include all four of the three types (I just like saying that :D), or only 3.  Then how would the PCGS slabs get shoehorned in?

Will the sets be more free form?  Will the custom sets carry over?  Would a top pop for a given service be awarded a benefit (I know one series where one company is about a point looser, and have no intention of crossing this way and that to get the looser grade just for a registry, but we know people who will).  And what about +, *, and PL?  Not all equally applied.

So though the ANA registry will have NGC data, I'm assuming it will have different rules.  NGC and PCGS can also run their registries too.  Just which playground do you want to be in I suppose.  This could get very interesting especially with the non-US collections.

Ooo, and will my ANA account match me to my StarCityHomer account here?  I use a different handle most other places.  This one got defaulted to as this was the name I had my registries under.  I lost my 'other' identity here.

Hello all if still there. Took a break from all the coins but did manage to sell the ancients all together for a nice price. We had 4 people go thru them in person and got an offer on the spot for about 65% of their value. Maybe a little low but we were fine with it.  Thank you to all here. Moving on to the World Coins - all inventoried. Finding that much more difficult. Will go hang out in those posts for help.

There are some good resources for ID'ing coins.  I forgot the name, but there is an app for world coins.  Plus sites like Numista (though it helps if you have an idea where to start).  If you can get a paper copy of the Krause book sometimes flipping pages helps.  The Krause also has a few introductory pages that include pictures of certain coin features that are associated with a particular country  (like a specific icon, eagle type, etc).  That said, posting a few of those good too.  And Krause can be woefully off on value (and the NGC price guide is powered by Krause).

Like mentioned above, condition can be key.  No matter the urge, cleaning is to be avoided unless you know what you are doing (akin to the difference between washing and scrubbing).

Maybe start a new thread with a new title too.

I am VERY happy about it but it does seem redundant, now that the all inclusive NGC Registry is back.

Only on the US side.  World coins still are NGC only.

This announcement really is interesting given the rather sudden return of the PCGS coins--somewhat premeditated and strategic in retrospect.  And, wouldn't it be nice if a set could be made on the ANA site that has ANACS, ICG, and even raw coins.  How to score points on the later would perhaps be the owner could give their grade, which would count for 75%.  Photos required and anyone who doesn't agree can ask for a more 'official' determination.  We all have rose tinted glasses on when it comes to our own coins after all.

And custom sets?  That would be cool.

  8. If you are primarily interested in encapsulated coins then look through Heritage and Stack's offerings.  They sell many that are NGC graded.  CNG and Shanna Schmidt are also very reliable with raw coins (as is her father Harlan J. Berk).  There are many, many reputable dealers of course but just off the top of my head those three are ones to mention.  Civitas Galleries too, though his are mostly raw as well.  I'm not a huge ancient collector, but I've bought from all of these and more.  Too many to really list, but these are good places to start.

Here you go: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces129442.html. I assume you've already determined it is the large type and are trying to determine the correct reference. In your picture the obverse is upside down and the spiral on the pearl is clockwise, so Y# A25.2.

If it's between large type and small type, the easy way is diameter: 38.6 vs 38.1 mm.

He was referring to the subtype for year 8, not year 7.

JNDA distinguishes between the two types for year 8 (as well as 4 types for year 7).  The Numista photo is of a year 8.  Sadly I don't read Japanese and rely on a partial translation of the catalog and a translation program.  Neither of which is completely satisfactory, but the best I can do.

In any case the JNDA does have a good illustration for the pearl spiral as well as the calligraphy of the 7 character for the varieties.

  10. PM sent, but I'm thinking it's the style of the 1 in the 416.  One of the older years of the JNDA has a special section on the 1 yen.  Can't quite remember it off the top of my head but maybe the 2015 or 2016.  The google translate app can kind of/sort of help but last time I looked at it seriously it was about a different year.

I'm very familiar, thank you. It would be nice not to have to toggle back and forth and to make the overall points all pretty like the rest of the new registry.

It would be nice for the new to be fully integrated.  I suspect the software lawsuit explains the delayed implementation.  Pending litigation generally results in no comments however.  Personally I am waiting for the custom sets to be brought to the new format as well.

Thanks. But that's the old registry. Happy New Year

It's still the registry and the rankings are up to date.  It's also the link to get to custom sets.  Go to your own log in page and you can see it reflects all the updated information.

I'm in the process of loading my Registry Type Set (1792-1964).

Apparently I already have two comments, but I can't locate them.

    How do I find them?

One thing you might be noticing is in the more recent past (maybe a couple years) whenever I added a coin the comment section came auto-loaded with a comma as a comment.  Made it look like I'd put in a comment when really it was nothing.  Just chalked it up as a weird-ism of the new system.

Hi - I love the old registry because I can see where I rank overall as well as in US Sets and World Sets. Where is this in the new registry? This is one of my favorite features. Hopefully it doesn't go by the wayside. It's a great motivator lol.

    hang on, fixing link

Well try this.  I couldn't find a direct link without being logged in, so maybe this will work after I logged out.

Cool, thanks for posting. He would have been 15 at that time.

15...and the penmanship!  I think we have an entire generation afflicted by dysgraphia.  Edited to add:  just to be clear, I am an honorary member of that generation, but my kids' handwriting, geez.  High school and it looks like a third grader.  And it's normal.

  16. You are looking for an escrow type service it sounds like...sometimes I wonder if this would be a thing for the interwebs.  It wouldn't protect against a nefarious chargeback on PP or a credit card 3 months later, but it does seem like a trusted third party to ensure cleared funds and products would be a thing.  That said, references can usually work too.  Most people are actually honest it turns out.

In any case, perhaps you should both present references and avoid credit cards or paypal.  That might help.

@roy herbst You make no sense in your decision. PCGS has never allowed NGC coins in their registry, I don't see you getting angry at them. But when NGC changes something, you get angry and say "I will just buy PCGS coins from now on". Why didn't you buy strictly NGC coins before?

Agree @Mk123 This mentality has always flabbergasted me.  The levels fury at NGC when they started doing the same thing PCGS always did.  It's like PCGS only adopted puppies but NGC adopted puppies and kittens.  Then decided to keep all their critters but only get kittens moving forward.  It's not like they went out and drowned anything.  And no one got mad at PCGS for only having puppies in the first place.  Never made sense.

If I add a PCGS coin that is already in one of my Custom Sets to the new registry will the pictures and owner comments entered in the Custom Set transfer over or do they have to be re-entered?   ***Owner comments are carried over. We discovered that if a coin lives only in the Collection Manager/Custom Sets, the image is not always carrying through to the Competitive Registry when added on NGC. This is a bug we are working on remedying.

Well poop.  I was exploiting that bug.  I have used different backgrounds for different sets (at one point going forward tried to match a background grey e3e3e3 which then changed a bit, sigh, when the earlier version of the new registry came about).  But, I have a custom set where the backgrounds are all consistent but white.  If the images get sync'd then either the registry or the custom set will no longer be homogenous.  I guess I will have to fix it when it happens.  Poop though, boring photo manipulation are in my future once I see which way it pops.

Or, you get your coin back in the same holder with the letters "DNC" on it and no explanation...

True.  The ones I've tried and failed (and I don't try on all of them) I generally realize either were the recipient of the PCGS 'eye appeal bump' or are just impossible to decide when still in a holder.  A DNC does not necessarily mean the coin is 'bad', just PCGS and NGC look at things a bit differently with different series, and sometimes need more information before allowing a cross.   It would be nice if there was a short checklist that could be ticked to give a reason, but that would add time and cost I suppose.

In any case, one option is to crack it out before sending in, or before sending it as a retry.

When trying to cross my goal is to be realistic regarding a grade minimum, and I frequently drop a point or two in that column of the submission form.  Not always, but many times.  I don't really care if my $200 in 64 becomes a $150 in 63.  That said I do care if my $2000 in 65 becomes $800 in 64, especially if it's a coin I'd like to sell someday, so the grade floor is nice to have.

In the end if it's a coin I want for my 'sets' I'll either buy it in an NGC holder or buy it in another holder (or no holder at all of course) and either crack it out or 'cross at any grade'.
