  1. Sandon Thank you for taking the time to write your post. Very helpful and answered my questions very well. I did write in one of my posts that we spent two hours together. He went through the first 150 coins and set aside around 100 for grading. So he did look them over. Not many "rejects". So they were all pre-approved so to speak for submission. I have no expectations. I am pretty sure I know the grades of my coins. With that said I know it's a matter of opinion and I will keep that in mind. In today's world coins need to be graded so someday they can be sold possibly by my children or grandchildren. For now this is a choice I have made. I am very fortunate to know such a well respected and experienced in this area. I'll post some of the grades when they come back. Once they do if I am satisfied with how things go I will submit another 100 and go from there.
  2. They are a trusted dealer. I am not worried at all. I trust them explicitly. They are 100% ethical and well established.
  3. I didn't ask. He took two hours to go over the coins for submission. They need to have someone fill out the forms for submission and I did not want to continue to take up his time. I think it's a good question that might be informative to me and others. I would not put the dealer on the spot with expectations of when to receive the coins back. We discussed it and he told me to be patient. I can do that. Some of you folks may have submitted recently and have an idea of how long it's taking. When someone does me a favor I don't like to ask to much of them.
  4. I just submitted a portion of my collection to NGC. I did not want to exceed the perceived cost of $2000-$3000. I know this will change depending on the grades I receive and the value that the grades will give to certain coins. Now to my questions. NGC states- Current Turnaround (working days)US: 26 days World: 31 days TOKENS US: 26 days World: 30 days I submitted them through a dealer. So to be safe let's say they have them by June 1 should I expect them back in 4 to 5 weeks? 20-25 working days? My last question is as follows but I want to clearly explain it.. I expect that some of my coins will PL or DMPL along with higher grades. I am hoping for some 66's. I could also get a gift or two and have a couple grade 67. I have submitted around 100 coins. With that said the fee to use economy is is $23 plus some additional shipping cost. No imaging. No designations with the exception of one error and one MPD. if the value of my coins exceed $300 what will happen to the grading fee? How much additional money will I need to pay? My guess would be that at least 20-30 Morgan's will exceed this value. Hopefully they use their own price guide to value the coins. It would not be very fair if they used "Grey sheet" to value my coins. I don't believe they do but the question still looms in my mind. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I am hoping some of you can help me out with these questions. Please share some of your recent grading experiences both good and bad.
  5. I think that is very cool. Thank you for sharing it!
  6. Die clashes can only occur in a certain way. I have many coins with awesome die clashes. I have kne with an 80% obverse to reverse clash minus the words. I'll dig it out sometime and post it.
  7. Consecutive slabs. Same year same grade. Proof like.
  8. This 1921 is very well struck. It has a full detail strike that is seldom seen I believe. The hair detail is incredible. Even the fine strands that meet her forehead can be seen. I took this picture with a 40mp camera so it does pick up even the slightest tick anywhere on the coin. In the hand and with a loupe it is practically spotless save for a few very minor hits. The 1921's were knocked around quite a bit so finding them in a good stage of preservation can be difficult. It's difficult if not impossible to see in this picture but it has a die crack reminiscent of the "scarface" variety. I made the effort to capture it in a picture. I thought it would be worth a share.
  9. Sandon that is a beautiful coin. I'm sure that cost you a pretty penny. I would say a coin like that will always hold its value. Very impressive.
  10. My favorite coin is the Morgan Dollar. Looking up the VAM is something that keeps it interesting for me. I am not sure if it's just the beauty or the different characteristics that come from each year but I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame. I would like to use this thread to share some of mine with you and hopefully see some if yours. I don't have the best or most valuable collection but it's pretty good. Most of all its a lot of fun. I'll start by posting this one. Common date but pretty coin.
  11. Well I am so happy to see this has turned into a productive post. Lots of nice coins and history discussion here. This is why coins are fun!
  12. If I were to collect Indian cents I would buy that book so I could narrow it down. At this time I am satisfied with this example. Thank you for sharing that information.
  13. I think it could be a snow 33 or possibly 34.
  14. I only have one Indian Cent in my collection. It's definetly a MPD but it has a few other things going on. Can someone help me with this. I don't have any books and my internet research is coming up blank. I took the best pictures I could. I think everything shows up okay except for the clash above the Indians head. It's much more obvious in hand with a loupe. The die crack on the reverse shows up in the pictures but again is much more pronounced in hand. I hope someone can offer some feedback. Thank you
  15. Thank you Sandon that was a great write up. I certainly did learn a few new things. I am a little more familiar with Morgan dollars as they are my primary focus and my favorite U.S. coinage. I do visit vamworld frequently to research the VAMs of the Morgan's I have. I do have many slabbed Morgan dollars but many more unslabbed. I've been talking with a coin shob thats an hour away from me. They are very reputable. I believe at some point I am going to pull out a large group of what I perceive to be my better Morgan's and have them slabbed. It's not something I am in a rush to do as it will likely cost me well over $1000 to have this done. I do think it will be worthwhile nonetheless. I keep them in inert plastic capsules as I feel it is the best way to protect them. I'll post some of my coins as the time passes and I get the urge to escape into coinland. Thank you!
  16. I actually have many questions about them but I wouldn't know where to begin. So please post whatever information you care to share. I am more than willing to learn about it. I think I have learned that different Overton varieties exist. If I am not mistaken an Overton variety is a pair of dies used that leave certain markers on a coin. Some are more common than others. One thing I have learned already is that clash marks are common on these coins. I did not know that. I think they are absolutely wild to observe. Whether or not they have a premium on them I do not know. It seems that while these coins are beautiful they are a bit crude when compared to the generations after coins that followed. Especially when we get into Morgan dollars. Morgan's are by far my favorite coins and I have a bunch and I will be posting them.
  17. You guys no doubt have coins that are much nicer than mine. I know they are nothing special. They help me cope with PTSD. So many different things to collect. I pull my coins out every so often to look at them to take my mind off of some things. It's a great hobby with so much United States history. I like to think that maybe some of these coins were in the pocket of one of our nation's founding fathers. We know for sure that they were used by the colonist. I see some people must have the best of everything but for me I will settle for these. Coins are fun!
  18. Here are a few I have out tonight to share with you. The 1810 has spots on it. They are actually a cobalt blue toning. I refuse to have it removed as it will take off all of what is left of the coins originality so for now it stays. I dont think they are the finest known or anything but they are mine to enjoy! If you have some please post them.
  19. Can you also please tell me what post-mint damage is? Would this be damage that did not occur during the minting process but rather after it went into circulation or left the mint?
  20. Here are some better images. I believe you will be able tonsee what I am talking about. I am trying to find the 1817 with a four in it also.
  21. I'm sure you cannot see it well but they are actually two letters. Not graffiti. We have no coins like that in our collection. I will get out my scope when I feel like it and post some pictures so you can see them. I can see them very well with a 10X loupe. There is also a clash mark at the back of her head. I am trying to find similar. Does anyone know of more clashed half dollars like this that I can research?
