  1. Here are some coins that I acquired from James (EarlyUS). He graciously allowed me to use his excellent photos of the coins. The first is a very attractive 1838 RE Half. While the grade is low (VF20) the eye appeal is high. This is an exceptional circulated coin with honest wear.

The half dollar is my favorite denomination to collect. I love original coins that have lots of character and eye appeal. This 1859 Seated Half is a delightful coin. The only weakness to this coin are some minor scratches to the right of Liberty's head. In hand they are not noticeable but are visible under magnification. The coin grades VF30 with the scratches taken into account. There is enough luster to grade higher but the wear keeps it from a higher grade.

Another super original Seated Half from the Carson City Mint. This is not as lustrous as the 1859 above but a very attractive coin in its own right. Evenly worn and a nice two-tone example of a desirable branch mint coin. VF35

An 1898 Barber Quarter. This is a phenomenal coin in hand. Clean, plenty of originality and luster. A very nice piece!

  2. Ask me anything you want TJ.

I use South African Coins & Patterns by Brian Hern.

Thanks, ZAR, I do have a question for you. Would you be kind enough to check on the metallic composition of the 1967 SA Proof coin? I'm assuming it is silver or silver/copper but I would like to know it more precisely.

I emailed Brian Hern regarding the book and the 2006 remains the most up to date. He is having more printed but will wait a year or two for another revision. Due to the high shipping costs from SA I have decided to wait to order at this time.

  3. Hi TJ,

My apologies: It is true that the 1967E has no Proof mintage ( I am checking my book as I type ).

However I made a mistake in my previous post:

    The 1967E says South Africa.

    The 1967A Says Suid-Africa.

    My apologies for any confusion.

I will now amend the original post.

Thanks ZAR thumbsup2.gif May I ask what book you would recommend on South African coinage?

  4. Aha - South African, my favourite collecting area.

I prefer my South Africans a bit older then the one in the post above. However I do like the coin especially the toning. Nice pick up. thumbsup2.gif

I also would like to point out that this is the version of this date which has Suid-Africa printed on the obverse ( known as 1967E ). The other type of this date has South Africa printed on the obverse ( known as 1967A).

The 1967E has no Proof mintage.

The 1967A has a Proof mintage of 25,000.

Thanks for the information on the mintage and variations of the 1967 Rand. Here are some nicely toned coins that I picked up from a board member about a year ago.
