  1. Thanks for the input all. I wasn't sure if maybe it was just normal dings and nicks, possible die polish lines,, or what. But it was just looking off to me. So that's why I was thinking possibly cleaned. And to me even if the coin is only worth a couple bucks, I wouldn't want it to have been cleaned (improperly) and diminish it further.
  2. Yes, I should have already taken it out of the 2x2. I know that can cause issues seeing things, I just try not doing it as I try to minimize handling any coins as much as possible. Anyhow, after removing the 2x2, these pics still show some of what I was referring too but they don't look nearly as bad now.
  3. @Big Nub numismatics I could be wrong. The marks I am looking at are around the edge and between the T and Y and down from there. It could very well just be the 2x2 it's in, but wanted others take just to be sure. I understand the coin holds very little value and could agree with not knowing why someone would clean it in the first place. This was the way I received it so wanted to double check.
  4. At the risk of posting another stupid thread I am looking for others take on this coin. Would you consider these lines as the coin had been cleaned? It is in a 2x2 but they appear on the coin to me. The "crack" going through the head I believe is on the 2x2 but the rest I think is on the coin. There is some markings on around the edge on the reverse as well.
  5. @Coinbuf It's what I figure but being that I know nada wanted to have others take a look just be sure. I appreciate the comment.
  6. I want to apologize for this most likely being a stupid thread, but I found this while going through my penny jar. I am fairly certain that it is PMD but wanted experts to check it over. It is odd to me because while I feel it is probably just PMD, the way the "cracks" are lined out makes me wonder. Also, they only go to the edge, not over onto the side of the coin or on the reverse. Thoughts and opinions?
  7. And I stand corrected and learned something also.
  8. I believe this would be called a MAD ( misaligned die). As for potential value can't help there.
  9. I can not speak as to whether the toning was done artificially or not as I am still new to a lot of this. So I will leave that to one of the more experienced people. As for whether NGC or another TPG grades toned coins, yes they do. As for the it being worth sending in, to me, that is completely a personal choice. It cost about $30-50 per coin with shipping. My limited knowledge again I can't give an approximate grade, but you can check the NGC price guide for reference https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/united-states/dollars/49/. From my understanding the prices listed are retail and you should probably expect half of that when selling.
  10. @Greenstang I apologize for being dense. I called myself searching before I ever made this post but the only ones I was coming up with was Carson City and the soft pack. I didn't see the others. I searched GSA coin holders, GSA hoard and don't remember what else. Thank you all again.
  11. Thanks everyone for all the replies. It is quite informative. However, my initial questions remain. It seems apparent my coin and holder is not a GSA, and that is perfectly fine and acceptable. From the time I received it I never really thought much about it being anything other than a Morgan that someone had stuck into the case it is. But after stumbling onto the GSA deal and seeing those cases ( ie: the CC hard case ) and the similarity to my case it made me wonder. I have since learned that it was very probable that someone made this case with ill intent. Again, not a problem for me as I can always move it out of this case at some point ( I have no intention of getting rid of the coin any time soon). So if I happen to stumble across something similar again, is there a way to tell? Especially if it is not in the original box, sealed, and or without the COA? Also especially if it is not a Carson City coin.Or would this just be a matter of seeing an authentic case and seeing exactly what it is comprised of and comparing?
  12. I didn't see that there were 3 hard plastic, I only saw one when I tried searching this out. But that is why I posed the question/s. All I saw was the Carson City coins/cases and from what I read 95% did come from there. However that leaves 5% that didn't and I couldn't find any reference to show a list of them all. And then given my case is similar. Just had me wondering.
  13. I understand and appreciate that. I am just thinking, being novice as I, not wanting to mess with it too much. But at the same time, based off your previous comment ( and my thoughts as well ) that this coins case was done to try and fool someone, I didn't want to leave it like that in the event something were to happen with me. By the way, this is another one that I received from an ebay coin lot sale someone bought for me a few years back.
  14. Okay, another question. Since this holder has the possibility of being misleading, what would you recommend? Just get a generic air tight and crack it out this one and put in the other?
  15. This is true and I was being lazy and didn't even think to copy and paste into the ole interweb
  16. @VKurtB When looking through the NGC holder types is when I stumbled on the sticker around the GSA holder. Which is where all of this came from. I've had this coin for a couple years now in that holder and never really thought much of it u till I saw that so it just kind of made me wonder. I tried looking around different sites about the GSA hoard and holder and did see some difference in mine which why I didn't figure it was but thought to ask anyhow. Still just trying to grasp a lot of this as I don't want to get snookered.
  17. Thanks Kurt and Greenstand. That is about what I suspected but wanted to double check. Other than just the style of holder, should there be some sort of marking indicating that it is GSA if it is not graded?
  18. First off, I want to apologize for the pics. I know they aren't very good and many of you who have read my previous posts know I suck at picture taking. The pics are only for reference. So anyhow, I had come across articles on the GSA Hoard and cases. From what I have been able to tell, these cases were quite large than the standard NGC cases. Also, from what I have seen, this was the only place these cases were used. Now my questions. Would this be considered a coin from the GSA hoard due to it's case? There is no other documentation. Should there be some sort of identifying marker other than the case style? Does being associated with a particular hoard add any value to an other wise normal coin? Also I realize my coin if from the SF mint and 95% of the GSA was CC, so I also don't know what if anything that would matter.
  19. Thank you for this. As much as I HATE for my stupidity to show through, it definitely does here. Never took Latin so had no clue what language it even was.
  20. I noticed this exact same ring on several of my quarters after using the coin counter machine I have. So that's what I attributed it to.
  21. Well the "shortage" has arrived here in the DFW area. There are news reports speaking of it. My wife was in New Mexico last week and the store she stopped at was only accepting card payments due this "shortage".
  22. I have no real input as for the grade. I just wanted to say that after seeing this, I have a I believe 1900 that looks way better than that MS65+ ( In my humble opinion) so it makes me want to send mine in ( insert sarcasm).
  23. Thanks @Moxie15 I didn't even consider the grease issue. I researched error 45's, missing letters and the like but wasn't coming up with anything. So I figured it was just heavily worn ( which it is also along with what you stated ).
  24. Hey guys and gals, I got this coin in a coin lot someone bought off ebay for me a couple years ago. The 2x2 it is has it written on it that it is an error coin due to weak strike missing letters. From my research and limited knowledge, this would not be true. It appears that it is just extreme wear but want to confirm it with you all. So what say you? Error? Wear? Or other?
  25. Thanks. When researching that is all I was seeing also was this year only done in one finish. I guess it was throwing me because the conformity of the toning all the way around.
