.....I devoutly hope that RWCIII's stuff bucks the trend.......Anyway, yeah, by all means bring 'em on, and let's hope that they run counter to the trend.

Just to be clear JKK, I am not getting my hopes up. Nor do I want to convey to you guys that I think I have something special. I am fully prepared to accept the coins and paper bills for what they are, and for what their market value is.

If they aren't anything special, I will keep it all and pass them down to my two sons. If I have something worth a retirement, well, Papaw will be looking down smiling and thinking "Your welcome bubba!", and I will buy my wife that land she wants. Raisin cattle and fishin trout in Arkansas Ozarks.....that is my idea of the good life.

  2. I haven't counted, but I believe I have a couple hundred coins. I've got just about everything I guess. I'll post pictures here on this thread. I suspect a few of these coins are worth grading/slabbing. I just need help figuring out which ones. I am currently studying the resources on this website to determine which coins are worth grading/slabbing. My mother has the balance of Papaw's collection in a lock box. I have just what he gave me while he was alive. The lock box contains gold coins, 1800's paper bills, all kinds of other things.

I wish not to wear the experts out, answering questions they have answered hundreds of times. I will do my best to educate myself. However, would you all be interested in seeing the collection here? This could be fun, and we can discover what I have together. Thanks for the warm welcome I have received today.

Tonight I will start the photo posting with a 1776 Continental Curency (1-C). I understand the probability that it is a fake. But to my untrained eye, and looking at Robert Rodriguez's collection, I need further proof its a fake. It does weigh 15 grams. Its Pewter.

Admin Note: I started this thread in the "Ask NGC" thread, and it was suggested I place it here. Please delete the other thread. Thanks!

  3. I am a newbie. Correct me if I am wrong. It is up to me to figure out if a coin I have is worth grading and slabbing, correct? The pre-screen process requirements stated above tell me I am basically on my own (with help from forum members?) until I find something that is worth spending the $$ to have graded and slabbed. I do not have 100 coins of a kind to submit, nor am I a part of the elite collectors society. Maybe one day!

Did you start your thread in the "ASK NGC" forum? If so, they may move it to the "Newbie" section, or you can just create a new thread here.

Yes, I did put it in the ASK NGC. I will wait to see what they do with it. I don't want to go about creating multiple threads right away. I am sure an admin will put it in its proper place. I am still getting a feel for the setup of this forum.

I am currently out of town on business and brought my collection with me. To pass the time, and for the entertainment of the more advanced numismatists, I will start posting in the Papaw thread my findings. I hope to both discover interesting facts, and to reveal something special. Crossing my fingers!! Wish me luck!!

Now I will see if there is a thread on the proper procedure to post pics. Thanks guys.

This could be really fun, then. Don't know about anyone here, but I'm sick to death of seeing threads (sometimes three about the same coin if instant reply is not forthcoming within minutes) about someone's modern, common, mechanical doubling coin where they post just a tiny portion of one side of the coin. Then they weep openly that the pic was too big to post the whole coin, let alone both sides. They evidently have never heard of image editors, many of which are free and will allow one to crop a photo and save it in much more data-economical form. Nope, that would be work, and the rule is "do the work for me--don't put me to any trouble."

Hahaha. I understand. I am an Admin on a Ford Truck website....so I deal with "newbies" over there all the time. Its okay to be a newbie. However, we live in a society of instant gratification, so I learn to expect it. I try to not be that annoying newb.

So, you mention that this could be fun. So lets have some fun! I started a thread about Papaws Collection.

It seems as though it has to be approved before it shows up. If/when its approved, join me in that thread, and we can have some fun! I am exploring this collection as much as you guys are!

    Welcome to the forum.

Thanks Bob. I actually have quite a nice collection of coins. So, I will probably be posting fairly often. I promise to not wear you guys out. However, your expertise is the reason I am here. I will do my best to identify and answer as many of my own questions as possible. I downloaded the PCGS app on my phone, that is helpful. I can probably narrow down 2/3rds or greater of my collection on my own. However there are some early 1800's and a Spanish 1777 coin I have yet to identify properly. This is all inherited. My mother has more in a lock box, gold coins, silver coins, 1800's paper money, silver certificates all kinds of stuff. Papaw started collecting in the 1930's around age 7.

The question is, how many newbies bother to read the WYNTK forum before they rush to post their questions/pictures?  My guess is almost none of them.

I did. THis is my first post. Found this thread searching for 1776 Continental Curency. I have what appears to be pewter 1776 piece. I've had it in my possession for 25 years. My grandfather had it since he was a kid, he was born in 1929. I am fully aware the likelihood it is a fake. If it is a fake, it is fairly convincing to this "newbie". I respect the real experts grow tired of answering the same questions over and over again. I will continue to research this piece and will not post about it until I have exhausted my own ability to tell if it is real or not. It weighs just over 15 grams. If it is real, it is getting auctioned so my wife and I can finally buy that large piece of property on the White River in Arkansas....wish me luck ya'll.
