  1. Thanks for all the kind words for the 59-D one. I have been a Dahlonega enthusiast for a decade. Rarity is a funny thing when collecting a type set of D-mint coins. The type III dollar is tough in any date, but the 59 is the most common with a mintage of about 4900. There are about 110 extant. There are four one year types in the set that are very tough. My goal with the set is not highest grade, but it is all about originality. The 59-D is AU58 and I had the opportunity to buy some higher grade type IIIs but none were "dirty" enough for me. Finding original non-messed with D-mint coins has become an obsession for me.

  2. What is imaged with the stars "pulling" toward the rim is not an artifact of the image. This may in part be due to die fatigue, but might more likely be due to the fact that no restraining collar was used with these pieces when minted. The open collar used on this series allowed the metal to flow not only into the design elements but also allowed it to flow toward the edge. This resulted in halves that might be somewhat different in diameter as well as spread or pulled letters, numbers and stars.
Tnanks Tom. I'm not a bust half guy and I happen to have an 1817 and mine does not display similar stars. That's why I asked. Thanks for the info.
  3. Boy, I'll tell ya FatMan, you sure know how to take pictures. Maybe you could hold a seminar. hail.gif
Well, actually I take lousy pictures. Brandon Kelley (Anaconda) imaged those coins. I bought the CT from him at the Whitman/Atlanta show before he had a chance to image it. And he said he really wanted to image the coin because they don't come like that too often. So I made a deal with him that I would let him take the CT back to Texas with him to image as long as he would image the Grant that was in my pocket as well. So a week later I received the coins back with the images. He can sure shoot great images. thumbsup2.gif
