  1. [It's coins like this which exhibit your exquisite taste, that makes you a "somebody" in my book!] 🐓
  2. Terribly sorry to hear that. He never knew how popular his thread had become: a virtual coin encyclopedia.
  3. 🐓: This mean the guy who runs the "Post your most recent acquisition: U.S.," thread, who hasn't been seen or heard from in over a decade was nothing more than an acronym all along??? Q.A.: Your guess is as good as mine.
  4. [Side historical note: Scoville? I believe George P. Metesky's sisters worked in their factory. They knew nothing of his criminal career as New York City's "Mad Bomber" back in the 1940's and 1950's.]
  5. This is the most beautiful "wee niggle" I have ever seen in my life! I don't want to know what the grade is because if there is even a hint of imperfection, I do not see it, and I don't want to know where it is. You made my year!
  6. 🐓: More sleepless nites, boss! Q.A.: That's okay. The ends justify the intermittent intervening means.
  7. 🏃‍♀️ Running critique... 🐓: You wouldn't say United States Postal, without Service [or USPS] so why would they mint a coin that reads U.S. Marshal, without the Service [USMS]? Q.A.: I don't know. 🐓: And why commemorate its 225th anniversary for which there apparently is no formal name? (Yes, I looked, and my search literally broke the internet.) Q.A.: I have no idea, but do me a favor: Like his post. Nothing escapes the vigilant gaze of his avatar. 😉
  8. Just a suggestion... you have been here about a week, more or less, and quite frankly stumbled and made a mistake reminiscent of mine: I didn't really know who all the major players were, and coming from a chaotic non-coin-related site, dove right in managing to insult, attack, roughhouse and alienate many very distinguished members without knowing who they were until I received a PM (private message) opening my eyes to the damage I had done. To this day, I am basically blocked 🚫 from contacting these members and, anonymous chatboards being what they are, many left accompanied by their loyal friends. My best advice is always wait a decent interval to get to know the players many of whom date to the inception of the chat board concept introduced, it appears, not long after 9/11. Just sit back and listen. Observe who is whom and whether other members deride him (like me) or defer to him (98.44% of the members here.) Get the Red Book, read it, study it and refer to it often. In the Old days (for me, that's before silver was taken out of coins) that was pretty much the standard reference available. It takes time to learn the pecking order here and who's who. You paid your dues; you might as well make the most of them. If you are serious about the "hobby," and not just a few coins you may have come across, read and listen. If you feel reasonably secure in your position, by all means, speak up or register your agreement with what's said by tapping the heart shaped "button" at the bottom right part of the post. Read and refer to the Guidelines governing use of the chat board. And don't forget: there is NO FREE SPEECH, NGC is not obligated to print your remarks and participation is not a right. It is a privilege that can be withdrawn without explanation or notice, at any time. I wish you and yours, all the best for a happy, healthy New Year! 🐓
  9. Unsolicited Editorial... To the OP: Remember this oldie but goodie? "Explosive impact copying." One of your earliest posts. To you, gentle reader: please do not begrudge those of us who revel in re-reading retread-threads, such as this well-choreographed number from 15 years back. Moi, a distraction? I beg to differ! You, who post your "most recent U.S. acquisition," routinely, on a thread whose threadmaster hasn't been seen or heard from in 11 going on 12 years. You, who prefer mastery of granular details and hallucinatory fantasies to plain old story-telling. As Hamlet said to Horatio: "there are more things on heaven and earth.... than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Thank you, @WoodenJefferson for a swell read! Oh, "how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus!" Happy holidays to all! 😉 🐓
  10. 1900 9443 (proofs) With only 615,000 minted, the 1900 is the rarest of the 🐓. Now I stumbled across an obscure reference to 9,000+ proofs 🐓. Where are they now? What happened to them? I vaguely recall one was listed for sale by Liberty two years ago for $24,400 -- but whether it was sold, or withdrawn, remains unknown to me. 🤔 How does one establish the fair market value for something apparently so rare? 🤔 APB/BOLO isn't the right term for this. Let's just say, SEEKING INFORMATION, and leave it at that. Note to file: no signs of the two MIA MS-68s
  11. No way I'm going to be able to go to sleep to-nite without knowing the outcome... 🐓
  12. I can't wait. Maybe now my 30-power loupe will seem respectable.
  13. @Woods020 (I think I should make clear I find the term "melt value," as a coin collector, personally offensive.) FWIW, subject-related questions accompanied the above-mentioned article, one of which was: Is it illegal to melt pennies? "It is not illegal to melt, destroy or modify any U.S. coins in the United States." (Emphasis theirs.) The reference given was: atlantagoldandcoin.com. Sept. 23, 2000. In all fairness, the proper procedure, stated elsewhere, is to wait until the cent is discontinued -- the year 2026 is indicated -- at which point your accumulation can be "sold" to a party who will then forward it to the government for a decent cremation. 😉
  14. I don't know where this notion came from: that a copper cent, is worth one cent. We all know that is not true! It's been said the smart man isn't the one who has all the answers. It is the person who knows where to go to get all the answers. You don't have to be a librarian; now all you need is internet access. I checked an ANA article published earlier this year, April. 23, 2021, entitled, "Keep Copper Pennies?" In it they state 10-11 copper cents ("wheaties") equal 1 oz. and are worth 27 cents/oz. Elsewhere, they refer to a PCGS coinflation app that [then] indicated melt was $0.03. A suggestion was made that like the Kennedy half, the cent will be relegated to mint sets in another five years. Even the faux cents being made today, with copper mascara, cost too much to make. Either way, I would appreciate it greatly if the distinction between the older and newer cents be maintained, as a matter of principle. 🐓
  15. Respectfully, I fail to see how a matter of time-sensitive, urgent importance could be expected to reach its destination, some 240 miles away, via the post office on such short notice.
  16. @EdG_Ohio You are too kind. Yes, I have been collecting coins long enough to get Buffalo (actually, Bison) coins in change. My wife is 100% disabled, but neither her family or doctor, psychiatrist, etc. could tell me why, psychologically. I have notebooks filled with her unique observations. Her family is deeply religious; her father was a pastor (deceased) as is now her mother. I included her comment about your coin, which I love, because I doubt you will ever hear that from anyone else! I appreciate the portrait of the native American. Edit: Many thanks for the link which opened up a whole new world for me!
  17. Asked my wife again what she thought of this gold Buffalo. (She'd already seen a Buffalo nickel.) Wife: "This is a lee-YON... (lion, on the reverse) and this (on the obverse) is a man." Q.A.: What kind of man? Wife: (no response) Q.A.: An Indian... How can you tell it's an Indian? Wife: The way she wears "her" hair. Q.A.: So it's a woman! Wife: "I don't know. She's ugly." Q.A.: By the way, have you ever been to the zoo? Wife: "No, never!" 🐓
  18. [Mystery solved within 24 hours; great detective work!]
  19. I do not ever recall seeing a bi-lingual coin. Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year to you, as well!
  20. Put a 90% copper cent, a Wheatie, minted only a year before the reverse design was discontinued and seldom found in circulation, back into circulation? What is this, a coin Forum or an amusement arcade? Suppose the government decides enough is enough and deems the cent kaput? I don't care if a billion were made, give this coin a decent burial in your chest drawer for future generations to enjoy.
  21. What a shame! Not even 150 years later and all is gone. The two time capsules buried at both the 1939 and 1964 New York World's Fair, courtesy Westinghouse, were meant to last 5,000 years. To my knowledge, neither has been tampered with. No one alive now will get to see their unveiling, which is just as well, as their contents, or so people thought at the time, were nothing less than embarrassing. By comparison, the dig conducted at King Tut's tomb was far more interesting.
