Here's a close-up of the date that I took to complement Mike's pictures:Awesome closeup!! Did you take that pic?The shield nickel is a beauty, which seems very odd to write.
Thanks for the comments, guys. I see that I'm now sandwiched between Boiler and IrishMike and then Chinook. But this particular Shield has a chance of holding its own.

I don't like following Boiler, but here we go . . . 1871 5c S1-3000

I haven't had anything to post for what seems like a loooooong time; so, I like the vicarious thrill of checking this thread. But I ought to have a couple of additions soon.

Are you pulling together a Lincoln 1c date/mm set, Lee? I've enjoyed the photos that you've posted.

Nice rotated die clash, Lee. Does anyone know why clashes are fairly common on silver 3c? Is it because the coin was so small that the Mint had trouble with the feeder mechanisms?

Do darksiders count?
Absolutely. But you have to educate me. What am I looking at?

That 1832 50c tickles my fancy.

That's salt in the wound!

I've come to the conclusion that your coins are so nice that it hurts me to look at them. Really.

Hi Lee – Can you tell us anything about the Omaha Bank Hoard (other than it contained some well preserved Lincoln 1c)?
IGWT I sent this question to "Ask an Expert" at Heritage. This is the reply I received today:
"The Omaha Bank Hoard came from a collector who obtained rolls of coins directly from a Omaha bank over the course of several decades. Heritage was fortunate enough to purchase the entire hoard."
Thanks, Lee. Not sure that it's deserving of a special notation on the insert . . . but, nice coins regardless!

Is that a vein popping out on Abe's forehead?
I'm hoping to post something here other than comments about veins and such after next month's auctions.

Not a big fan of Seated coinage, but I certainly like that dime, Mike.

I almost always have to grab a reference book when Boiler posts a coin. My guess is J-54 – a restrike in copper – based on the cracked obverse die. Beautiful.
-
Ahhhh . . . that's better.

400 I like woodgrain toning; but, as you know, what I like cuts against the . . . Nevermind.

Latest addition: 1876 5c DDO (S1-1003, no listing in either Fletcher or CPG). Graded MS-64 by NGC, but I would give it a technical grade of a high 62 or low 63. The strike is soft -- seen most clearly on the east leaf clusters -- and there are a couple of hits in the prime focal areas of the shield. There are also planchet defects; you'll see the most obvious in the 7th argent of the shield. But, the eye appeal might account for the grade that it received. The obverse is from a fresh die without the typical cracks, the surface has proof-like flash, and the tone is a deep amber with an orange tint.

That E in UNITED just had to be different, didn't it. Kind of reminds me of the white iris among the blue.
