    James Fraser, and "B.D." himself!
Black Diamond was not a ?model? model!... Legend has it that James Fraser picked Black Diamond, a buffalo who lived in New York's Bronx Zoo, as the model for the nickel he was designing. You'd think BD would be honored, but he refused to pose! He kept turning to watch Fraser draw instead of standing sideways. Fraser had to get a zookeeper to catch the animal's eye while Fraser snuck around for a side view.

2 Moons, or not Two Moons!
Two Moons (of the Cheyenne),also known as M?s?h?voo'x?n?he, Crazy Roman Nose)was a chief of the Cheyenne Native American tribe. He participated in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was one of three models James Fraser used for the Indian Head nickel.

    Chief Iron Tail
Iron Tail (Sinte Maza) was an Oglala Sioux who fought alongside Sitting Bull at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He also performed with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show during the 1890's and with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West show from 1913 to 1916. He died of pneumonia on May 28, 1916 while traveling by train to his homeland, the hills of South Dakota. He was one of three models James Fraser used for the Indian Head nickel.

    End of the Trail
Chief John Big Tree (2 June, 1877 ? 6 July, 1967) (birthname: Isaac Johnny John) was a member of the Seneca Nation and an actor who appeared in 59 films between 1915 and 1950.
Big Tree claimed to be one of three Native American Chiefs whose profiles were composited to make the portrait featured on the the obverse of the United State's Indian Head nickel, designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The other two chiefs were Iron Tail and Two Moons. Big Tree claimed that his profile was used to create that portion of the portrait from the top of the forehead to the upper lip. Big Tree also claimed to be the sole model for Fraser's most recognized work, the doleful "End of the Trail." Both of these claims are broadly disputed, and Fraser identified other models[2][3].
He also appeared on the March 1964 cover of Esquire magazine, in a pose commemorating the Indian Head nickel.[4]
He was born in Michigan and died in Onondaga Indian Reservation, New York.

James Earle Fraser's actual, and inspired designs of the American Bison with the native American appearing on our coins for 100 years. These are our Buffalo Chips!
The Set embodies the 20th & 21st Century US and Canadian minted coins featuring Fraser's designs, beginning with the "world famous" Indian Head or Buffalo nickel, circulated from 1913 to 1938. These coins depict the Buffalo/Bison/Indian Head, North American Coins designed or inspired by sculptor James Earle Fraser's depictions of Black Diamond(Starring as the Buffalo), and the American Indian, whose Image is a convergance of images posed for by several Native Americans that included Chief Iron Tail and Chief Two Moons. (And, In retrospect, also holds an eerie resemblence to the native American who took part in the pollution TV commericals of the 60' & 70's.-Brings a tear to My eye-Too!)
Inspired by Frazier's design, also emerged versions of the American Bison as on the 1991 Mount Rushmore Commemorative Clad Half Dollar (Reverse); 2005 Westward Journey Nickel "Grazing Buffalo" Obverse; and on the Obverse of the Clad and Silver versions of the 2005 Kansas, the 2006 North Dakota, 2007 Montana Statehood Quarters, and the 2010 Yellowstone* National Park Series Quarters each depicting the American Bison in similar landscape settings.
My Goal in creating this set was to provide an informative and attractive medium that provokes interest and respect for the life and heritage of the North American Natives, and the importance of, and dependence on the American Bison, held to by both the Native Americans and the settlers alike.
A real irony is that at his end "Black Diamond", rather than being "stuffed" for a museum display, became "stuffing" for sausage, and ground round in a butcher shop. How Tragic a close for our "prestigeous american icon."

Hey -They're almost Here . . And I hear there's even gonna be another "Reverse Proof" Too!

(This Posting is meant mainly for the "Newbee" collector of Silver Eagles, the rest-o-ya', Please indulge me, and update my info when nec.)According to an article on 8/20/2011 from SilverCoinsToday:To celebrate the Anniversary, the United States Mint announced plans for a 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set. This 5-coin set will be limited to 100,000 sets, and is scheduled to debut in late October. The Mint is waiting til almost the -Last Moments- before letting us in on all the details(due to fluctuating silver prices), and opening up for business. The Set will be composed of:1 2011-W American Silver Eagle Proof,2 2011-W American Silver Eagle Burnished Uncirculated,3 2011-P American Silver Eagle Bullion Coin,4 2011-P American Silver Eagle REVERSE PROOF,5 2011-S American Silver Eagle Bullion Coin, bearing the San Francisco "S" Mint-mark. One San Francisco Mint silver eagle was previously issued on 5/31/2011. Identical to the bullion version silver eagles struck throughout the year at Phil./West Point "without" a mintmark. Certification by NGC required that these (S) coins were submitted while still in their green "Monster Box" bearing the S.F. Mint Seals and Audit Tags. Until that release, collectors can obtain some of the coins individually. The first three eagle coins above have already been issued, NGC is providing a 25th Anniversary Label for these issues, however- coins issued in a Set will, most-likely bear the 25th Anniversary "SET" Label on the Slab. Pricing also has not yet been determined. The 2006 20th Anniversary 3pc Silver Set Sold for a Flat $100.00, when the silver Spot Price was under $9/oz. The current volatility in Spot Silver pricing bouncing between $38-$48/oz has forced the Mint to update its silver coin prices almost daily(as they have with Gold & Platinum coins for the last couple of years). The Burnished Eagle was made available last week from the Mint selling for $60.45, and the Proof Silver Eagle, available since 6/30/2011 for $68.45. Now if Silver prices decide to do a nose-dive, let's hope that US Mint pricing follows suit!(9/24 Silver spot at $30.45-Down 10 Bucks!) With nothing to cast a doubt that the Mint will be issuing the 5-Coin 25th Anniversary Set at other than the same $65-$70 per coin ballpark pricing as the other 2011 issues, making the estimated issue price around $350.00. (But then, I could be way off!) The US Mint also has not indicated whether it will offer any of these coins individually(but probobly not).CERTIFICATION OF ANNIVERSARY SETS: Let it also be assumed that Certification of this 5pc set will Demand(YES DEMAND) that the silver eagle coin sets are submitted to NGC(and other services) in the same manner as the 2006-20th Anniv. Sets were- WHILE STILL "SEALED" IN THE US MINT SHIPPING CARTON, "Do not open those shipping cartons! Pack-em up "as they are" and forward them along!MORE NEWS TO FOLLOW . . AS IT COMES IN!9/27/11 - KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE "2011(W)Struck at West Point" Label Silver Eagle, it might just be a 'Hype' coin. Though it carries the NGC Label, so far NGC has not decided to give it it's own Slot in the Competative Sets.CLICK HERE FOR MY FOLOW-UP ARTICLE: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/JournalDetail.aspx?JournalEntryID=9577You can view the original article at; SILVERCOINSTODAY-> http://www.silvercoinstoday.com/2011-w-american-silver-eagle-uncirculated-coin/104813/KITCO SPOT PRICES-> http://www.kitco.com/market/ US MINT SCHEDULE-> http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProdschedView?storeId=10001

Just received a bunch of 2011-W Burnished Silver Eagles.
My dilema: Just in, Fresh from the Mint, 10 Burnished Silver Eagles, pretty and shiney, not a mark on any of them (except for the "W"). They are (almost)sure to each grade a 70, along with the Early Release distinction.
    What is the dilema?
With a Unit cost from the Mint at $60.45(x10) plus the $4.95(.495 per coin) S/H. Sending them to NGC will cost about another average $18 per coin for Grading and Round-Trip S/H/I. This will give me a Total Unit Cost of about $78.95, and their not all guaranteed to grade MS-70's.
Meanwhile, I just bought one Already NGC Certified MS70-ER on Ebay, from a reputable Dealer for $83.95 + 2.05 Shipping! The coin came from the dealers stock, Not a pre-sale. Is it worth all the time & expense to send out my small batch for a difference of only $5 per coin?
Obviously if US Mint stock was Sold-Out, the ebay numbers would be different.
Send Them Out, or Keep-em OGP?
    (10/5/11-I sold Them!)

Is This Really A New Issue, and will there also be a "2011(P)Struck in Philadelphia" Label as well(I hope so)?
I know that the US Mint issues silver bullion version coins from most of the Mints throughout the year, not bearing any mintmark. This year, the collectors market has been infused with a few variations that includes the (S)-Label, and the 25th Anniversary Label-which so far has not been officially issued by the Mint itself.
I saw this coin below for sale on Ebay today. it was also presented on TV last weekend, along with the Presenters proprietary West Point Star Label. The coin Obverse is the regular No Mintmark face.
It appears that it is just another Bullion issue silver eagle, but since NGC(and the other players)Certified them with this label, will a Slot be allocated to the coin in the Set Registry? Probably not.
To clarify my question- Is necessary to issue a Hype version of a regular issue, or Will this (W) Label issue eventually get its own Registry slot as did the deserved "(S)Struck at San Francisco Mint" version?
Will there soon be a follow-up issue, the 2011(P)Struck at Philadelphia Mint" Silver Eagle, I'll buy that one!
As it turns out, There will be-of sorts! It&'s the 2011-P Reverse Proof eagle as part of the 25th Anniversary Set. (But it won't really say Struck at Phila).
    Below-Pictures of 2011 Highligt coins.
