  1. Hello Lisa B

Thank you for the reply.  And thank the NGC graders for such a  rapid review -very honorable of them.

In terms of the long nose variety, I have consulted several Edward VIII collectors on the 'long nose' variety and there is no mention in the 'Portraits of a Prince' . In fact we had already reviewed all known reference books concerning the long nose variety and could find no evidence of such a mention. Geoffrey Hearn owned the original dies which my friend, Richard Lobel acquired an proceeded to make additional Coincraft issued fantasy pieces.

According to Richard, the re-strikes of the Edward VIII Effigy had an ugly ear which was the prominent way of telling the original from the re-strike as well as a few re-strikes having a 'circular band / discoloration ring on the coin.

As you can clearly see from the pictures supplied, the Coincraft effigy demonstrates a perfect set of ears but missing the bridge to the nose. Discussions with numismatic collectors of Edward VIII coinage, have come to the conclusion that to be deemed a long nose variety, the bridge of the nose must not be present at all and that the nose extends clearly to the eye.

Could you please review and provide feedback.

Thank you for the reply and as such we hope that a further review of the long nose variety will be considered. Should more information be needed, please do not hesitate to request.

    Appreciate your kind help.

    Warm regards,

    Dr. Morgan

  2. Hello Ali E

Can you please ask the NGC graders to recognize the variety of the missing 'U' in the word 'Hundred' on the reverse of the Copper-Nickel Palestine Fantasy coinage of Edward VII (minted by Coin Craft - Richard Lobel).

Pic 1a and 1b (close-up of normal  word ' hundred' on reverse.   Reference: Giordano FM59B

Pic 2a and 2b (missing 'U' letter in the word 'Hundred' on the reverse. The middle of the reverse circle that has 'Palestine' in Arabic also has a letter section missing in the lettering. Reference:  Giordano FM59B

I have the complete Palestine Fantasy collection made by Richard Lobel (Coincraft) that includes the gold sovereign, Gold crown, silver, gilt bronze and copper pieces all graded by NGC and the variety of the missing' U" in the word 'Hundred' only seems to appear with the copper-nickel coinage of the Palestine fantasy issue set.

  3. LONG NOSE VARIETY - SEEKING NGC TO RECOGNIZE THIS VARIETY

RE: WITH REFERENCE TO THE FANTASY COINS OF COINCRAFT (RICHARD LOBEL SERIES)

ON A VERY FEW OF RICHARD LOBEL'S EDWARD VIII FANTASY PIECES COLLECTORS HAVE FOUND A DIE ERROR/ MINTING ERROR ON THE EFFIGY OF EDWARD VIII.

COLLECTORS HAVE LABELLED THE VARIETY 'LONG NOSE' DUE TO THE  RESEMBLANCE OF THE EFFIGY HAVING AN EXTENDED LONG NOSE.  THE 'LONG NOSE' VARIETY  (ON THE  EFFIGY OF EDWARD VIII)  IS WHERE THE BRIDGE OF THE NOSE EXTENDS DIRECTLY TO THE EYE AS THE FOREHEAD/ BRIDGE IS MISSING THROUGH A DIE/ PRINTING ERROR THAT MAKES THE NOSE VERY LONG (PINOCCHIO NOSE) AND IS SEEN THROUGH-OUT THE DIFFERENT METAL COMPOSITION  OF  THE RICHARD LOBEL (COINCRAFT SERIES).

    LONG NOSE VARIETY COINCRAFT.jpg

THE VARIETY SEEMS TO BE ACROSS THE WHOLE SERIES OF THE EDWARD VIII COINCRAFT FANTASY COINAGE BUT RATHER SCARCE TO LOCATE A PIECE. I HAVE SEEN A LONG NOSE VARIETY IN THE GOLD SOVEREIGN, SILVER SOVEREIGN AND THAT OF THE NICKEL AND BRONZE CROWNS COINAGE BUT NOT YET SEEN ONE IN THE SILVER CROWNS.

NGC GRADERS PLEASE ADVICE IF YOU REQUIRE FURTHER INFORMATION.

Ah, wonder if we could access that talk from the states?  Well, PM me an email address and I could send you some photos if that would do. Quite a number of pages by recall and will have to find that catalogue that is buried somewhere...LOL. I will have a look around later this evening if you like and take pictures if that would do as my scanning device would require cutting up the catalogue itself.

If I can locate the catalogue, I will see if somehow I can scan it but as I said that might be difficult without cutting it up which I can't do at this point.

BTW, do you have any information on the Pretoria mint holdings of proofs and patterns prior to deaquisition? I have a number of coins from that gotten from numerous and varied sources. In particular I have been trying to track some 1927 GB patterns of the new silver coinage; I haven't slabbed them as I do not believe the TPGs will recognise them....Also, I am curious about some of the other GB proofs and patterns 1902 through however late they went. HA had a 1922/4 specimen proof set of GB go through their hands almost 20 years ago which also referenced them, etc.

Thank you for the reply  7.jaguars

If you or any other fellow Numismatist is  interested in hearing a talk from Known coin Dealer Richard Lobel (who we have approached to be the guest speaker) covering the Edward VIII fantasy pieces over the years, then we could link you/ fellow interested Numismatists on our numismatic online forum on the 17th November which starts at 3pm South Africa time. At best, if you are not able to hear the discussion, then we do live recording and you could then access that and hear/ see the discussion taking place (probably be about an hour/ hour and a half. I have yet to confirm his availability for the 17th but so far all seems fine. I am not sure it will cover any of the Patina items and if it did, probably the Edward VIII pieces. Those interested please message me. Some background as to what you collect, email and any Numismatic society you belong too. We can then ping you an email invitation or send you the recordings.

It seems scanning of the catalog of the Spinks Patina collection may involve some hard work - apologies upfront if it does to you or any other collector willing to help scan.

WRT Pretoria Mint. Its been pretty tough finding out information but there seems to be a new find by Professor Malan and as such, the information that you are looking for may very well be coming out in a book/ catalog early next year....or at least some of what you are looking for.

  5. Hi 7.jaguars

It is almost impossible to obtain a copy...I have emailed Spink, searched far and wide. A scanned copy would be awesomely appreciated!

Brg5658 indicated INA minted others that form part of the patina collection.  Most interesting - love the designs and have a large collection of Edward VIII medals and fantasy coins myself (I have a journal/ listing in the NGC collection board and a journal as well) hence the interest in obtain some more information covering the Patina collection.

A little bit off the subject - Our South Africa Numismatics online forum will be discussing the fantasy pieces of Edward VIII on the 17th November 2020 with a VIP guest talk and I am sure that the Edward VIII Patina pieces will be talked about in the forum amongst other things.

  6. Hi brg5658

    Thank you for your reply.

I did not know that INA produced more than what was in the Spink catalog 'patina collection' .

If there is more designs available for a collector outside of what was in the 'patina collection' sold by Spinks, then do you perhaps know of where to obtain this information on all their mintages (in reference to only the Patina  series) or varieties?

I have tried to obtain a copy of the above 'patina collection'  catalog of Spinks but it is somewhat scarce and hard to come by.

Appreciate some feedback - thank you.

  7. Hello NGC

Would our fantastic NGC Graders consider labeling / recognizing the strike doubling of the South Africa 50c coinage issued from 1990 - 2000 dates?

There is much interest in Numismatists with regards to varieties and several known South African collectors are keen to hear if the NGC Graders would consider recognizing or consider labeling the 50c coin as such.

I have attach some photos of the 50c coin having the 'doubling' (I would assume its mechanical / strike doubling) as well as a sample of a 'normal' minted 50c coin. Furthermore, in the MTB coinage book on South Africa, there is a small exhibit/ listing covering the 'doubling' as a reference.

Should NGC agree / recognize the doubling, I can send through some coin samples for their kind review/ grading.

    Thanks .

  8. Here is the submission entery note awaiting the kind review of Dave Camire:

To aid Dave and other NGC graders in coming to a conclusion, I sent them a free printed copy of the MTB coin catalog on South Africa coins (2018 - 20) as the information in the catalog does provide a health account of the three QEII South Africa Mint struck coins / medals. The SA Mint have also verified they did strike them.

So far all compliments to Matt for his continuous assistance on this website. This method of contacting NGC has been most helpful and so far for the majority of inquiries. Thank you MATT from all Numismatists ^^
