  1. lol, I agree about the price gouging. I went by at 6pm specifically so I could miss the lemmings trying to get a glimpse of these clowns. In my mind, they are just regular guys and no more a celebrity than I am. I enjoy seeing the things that come into their shop on the show because there are sometimes things I own or have owned brought in. Even that level of interest is waning for me at least though because of the obviously staged scenarios played out in the show. Even so, it was cool to go in and look around to see what it was like and the Frankie is quite nice... My cell phone picture on the hotel bed didn't do it justice. I figure I over paid for it by about $10, but it came in this really nifty velvet bag with drawstrpings, so that makes it all even..right? :P
  2. lol.... ok, I really don't have a lot of graded Frankies, but being on a business trip this week, I stopped by everyone's favorite pawn shop and HAD to buy something... I slightly overpaid for it, but I figured it was worth it just for the story... that and otherwise I would have had to consider a silver round of Chumlee.... and that just is lower than even I will go. I did get a picture of the clerk I bought the coin from holding it though...

  3. Wow... super nice Ken. I am jealous.... Those are geogeous. How did you come by those? Were they together in a set? Do you know the mint date? That appears to be the Arizona on fire on the obverse? I noticed you inlcuded the Oklahoma BB-37 in your message. Holy cripes.... Were you on board her at Pearl?

Sorry for the barrage of questions.. these are really cool medals.

  4. As near as I can tell, they are a private company engaged in production of medallions and souvenir coins for businesses and some military organizations. We have one here in Washington State known as the NW Territorial Mint that does the same kind of stuff. Some of the coins they turn out are quite nice. I like this one as it complements some other medallions I have. I don't like it enough to pay $120 for it mind you as Mr. Jones indicates the current value to be, but at melt plus dealer markup, I like it.

  5. Wow... Did I stump the jocks or just nobody cares? If the latter, then never mind. If the former, then read on...

I got the following from the Honolulu Mint:

    Honolulu Mint

Looks like a medallion minted by the “former” Honolulumint

original co. went bankrupt in 2005, and I purchased assets and name only.

50th anniv medal was minted in silver or gold weighing 1 troy ounce.

Sold for $29.00 in 1991. A silver 1 oz. medallion retails for $120.00 in 2013.

Srtiking was limited to 1000 total in 1991 as a “limited edition”

  6. I went by the coin shop yesterday, just to see what was new and as I was snooping around the silver case, the below silver round caught my eye. I was immediately intrigued as my son had gone to Pearl Harbor last year and brought me some medals of the Arizona, the USS Bowfin, and of course the Missouri. I bought the round from the dealer for melt plus his 3% and brought it home to add with my other Pearl collection. Looking online, it appears this coin was issued by the Honolulu Mint and originally issued with a COA in a nice box, which unfortunately didn't accompany my find. Looking at the Honolulu Mint web site, they don't seem to list any history of their productions such as mintage quantities and such. I does seem that they issue a new production of a medal at least every 10 years so I doubt there is any rariety to this. However, it was just kind of "neat" and I love ship related medals anyway. Does anyone else have any information on these?

  7. Nice ASE BobC....MS 69 you can't go too wrong with. I bought one with this label also.... Look at it this way, if it was a mistake, at least you weren't alone!. I suspect the value of the ASE with the San Francisco label is going to be largly dependent on the future of the Mint and if they decide to start putting a S mint mark on the ASE's like they did with the anniversary set. Even if they start doing that, these coins may hold some value down the road somewhere as being "the first" out of the SF mint..... I also don't know how many of them were labeled like this.... That can make a difference obviously as well. Then of course there is "what will the price of silver do tomorrow" aspect.... Who knows.....

I look at it like this. If I put money in the bank, I am getting next to nothing on interest and inflation is going to overcome whatever little interest I might make on the money. Putting money in the stock market.... well, I do have a large majority of my investments in stocks.... I also have some really nice stocks that I could use for toilet paper if they wern't so stiff.... Silver Eagles, while they may never make me rich, I figure they will always be worth *something*.... more than I can say for my stocks I mentioned earlier.....

  8. Even if the slabs leak air, and toning takes place, am I correct in that it will not affect the grade given to the coin during it's encapsulation? Again, I am pretty green to collecting, but based on what I have read about grading criteria, it seems that the grade assignment has more to do with the surface condition of the coin (wear, scratches, etc.) vs. the coloration of (or lack thereof) toning... Somebody steer me back to the straight and narrow if that's not correct!

    Thanks,

  9. I was flipping through channels on the tube the other day and came across one of the network coin shows. I realize that 90% of what these folks drone on about is hyped but when combined with this thread, it made me start to wonder. The guy on TV was making his pitch and was saying "buy the coin, not the holder". In other words, if a coin was slabbed 5 years ago, maybe it wouldn't receive the same grade today that it did back then. I am fairly new to the hobby, but my understanding was the slabs were air tight, and the purpose of the slab was to preserve the grade of the coin. Any thoughts from you more experienced folks on this?

  10. Nice 1909 S! I am still searching for one..... Regardless of the photo, it looks pretty nice to me!

    I have sworn that the 1909-S V.D.B. will be the last coin I buy;

it means that I have finally finished my childhood collection of

Lincoln cents and there's nothing else left to buy.

    :o

lol.. well congradulations on finishing your childhood project... If you are like me, that means you only have x^12 collections to finish! I keep trying to be methodical and finish my Lincoln cent collection, dimes, and so forth, but then things like the current commemoratives, the ATB series, and so on come along and completely distract me.... I end up spending way more money than and I should and still don't have my collection finished.... sigh...

  11. Thanks Filthyhoard... I bought it without really checking the design that close. When I got it, I was really "wowed". Thanks for the advice on grading.... Yeah, I will probably just keep it tucked away for now.... I am hoping with all the $ I am investing in coins of various designs and descriptions, that some day I will be able to parcel them off for retirement... since social security is likely to provide me as much money as the tooth fairy the way it's looking.....

  12. The is my MOH coin I purchased from the mint several months ago, but just got around to scanning. There was some dust on the scanner bed which shows up as white specs on the image, but the coin is spotless. I am cosidering sending this one to NGC for grading... what do you folks think? Would it be worth it? hm

BTW - some nice coins out there folks...this is great!!!
