    new addition to my Morgans
i just received my coin from Heritage. i know i paid too much for it!
If i am reading it correctly, NGC's COin Explorer has it as a population of 1. If im wrong, please correct me. 1879-S MS64+ with * designation as well. I dont know why but i had to have this for my Morgan dollar, San Fran date set. I have become obsessive over this set! Its unhealthy! Anyone know what i mean?
I also snagged a NGC 1896-S XF45 Morgan off of ebay for an average price. At least for what i saw them selling for elsewhere.

    i need your opinions
i was going through some older coins that i picked up when i first started this hobby.
I found a roosevelt dime in a PCGS slab graded MS64FB.
The thing i noticed about this coin was the cool colors it had.
My question for you toner buffs is, what kind of toning would this fall under? what i really mean is, what level does it fall under, low, low-mid, mid range toning? Would it draw in a premium?
    Thoughts?

Newest addition to my collection of Morgan dollars
So I recently have been searching for the perfect 1888-P Morgan dollar for my set. My goal was to find one with good strike and attractive to the eye in MS65.
I have had a hard time finding one with both qualities at a good price.
    here's my situation.....
I finally found one that looks awesome! All the qualities I was looking for. Great detail on the key points of the surface and great luster! I truly have not seen a 65 that has looked this good yet! Now, I can get it for $240 which I think is fair when I look at all the others I have seen in the $225 price range.
But, I also found a semi-nice 65 with the star designation for $260. Its an extra 150 points in the registry for $20 more. But it doesn't have nearly the strike quality the cheaper one has.
I bought the cheaper one without the star because of how awesome the detail is compared to the last, probably, 200 1888 ms65 Morgans I have seen.
Any thoughts? Should I have gone for the more points and star with weaker strike?
Anyone have any experience in these situations. I truly wanted the better coin, in my eyes.
P.S. I will have detailed pics when it comes In if anyone is interested in seeing it.
    Thanks for stopping by

I will post a pic when I get home from work....
Question: does splotchiness automatically mean AT?
One more: is it possible that a Coin be AT if it is in a respected TPG slab?
I picked up a NGC ms65, 1899-O Morgan dollar. It has some very nice toning, IMO but it has some splotching which drew some red flags for me. I paid FMV for a normal ms65 1899-O Morgan which is another reason I think its AT.
I will have picture up in about 2 hours from now

I hope the mailman brings me something good
Today is the final day the mail is running before Christmas and i really hope that he will bring my package from NGC! I hate that they mail my coins back registered mail! Im wondering if i could request other ways for them to ship back? Afterall, i am the one paying for it anyway.
I could have had them ship me my coins back overnight for just a couple dollars more than what i paid for registered. I have NEVER had a package not make it using USPS overnight service.
Just something to think about next time.
Merry Christmas to everyone on the boards, that is, if this makes it theere since my last 2 journal entries were not posted to the chat boards!

My goal for this year was to break to 10k points in my "Nicks San Fran Cuties" Morgan dollar date set.
I just added my 1880-S MS64+PL Morgan dollar to make 10,200 and change. I kind of had to cheat a little. More like, I revised the set to consist of not just San Fran Morgans. I added my 1901-P and 1899-P just to hold me over until I can afford to buy coins again. Its going to be a while. Unless I sell some. I may do that, I have a bunch that I could let go. I also have the 1893-P but that is going to be the one that stays for a LONG time!
To see pics go to "Nicks San Fran Cuties" in the Morgans, one-per-date sets. I don't have pics of my most recent additions but will soon.
    thanks for stopping by

    got my grades back already!
NGC had my packed plugged in as received on 12/07/11. i paid for the economy packed which, at the time, hAD LIKE A 19 BUSINESS DAY TURNOVER. it is now 12/19 and they are now finalized and shipped! i am VERY VERY happy with my grades and the short turnover!! thank you to everyone at NGC.
i only had one that i was curious about, my 1882 CC says "dip residue" thast means it will come back raw right? i kind of want to take it to the dealer i bought it from and ask him if he knew anything about it....
    Anyway, here are my results:
    All Morgans
    1899 P MS61, which i predicted a 60
    1893 P AU55, which i predicted a 50
    1882 CC "dip residue"
1884 S AU53, which i thought would come back in purple slab
    1901 P AU50, which was about right
Thanks to everyone who posted feedback in my decision to grade the 84-S!
Ill have pictures for anyone interested when they get home
    thanks for stopping by!

Got a special package in the mail AND updates on my recent submission!
Today in the mail i received not one, but two packages! One was an NGC sample slab with the 1982-D Washington Commem. that i won off E-bay. its a cool slab. thats the only reason i bought it.
The second package was my daughters NGC graded 2011 25th Anniversary set which i bought from a fellow member of the boards! this gentleman was truly a great person! im not sure if he wants his name out there but he sold it to me for the price of his costs. i did however pay him for his time and efforts because i do believe in Capitalism and fely he deserved some compensation!
Anyway the set is a MIX OF 69'S AND 70'S, the bullion and W mint MS coin being 70's. i am extremely happy with the set and the overall transaction! This gentleman deserves a whole lot of good Karma. Thank you, you know who you are! If he wants to put his name out there i will let him do so to take the credit.
I also want to thank Kenneth F, because although we did not end up doing business, he was there all the way, ready sell me a set for my daughter. He is a good man as well! Thanks brother.
Then my recent submission upgraded to "scheduled for grading". Im dying for this one because i really want to see how my 5 morgans come out especially the 84-S......
    thanks for stopping by!

id like to educate myself a little
i would like to start researching info on the different NGC generations in slabs...
i am quite fascinated with the black slabs especially.
note to self: maybe try to keep my eyes open for exhisting black slabs...possible purchase?
Do the cert numbers run sequentially in order of coins graded throughout history?
    possible book exhist? articles?
is there anyone out there who is educated in this that would like to teach? im always here!
    thanks

    Morgans
I finally decided to put my membership to more use. I decided to certify some of my raw Morgan Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, date set. Among others.
So i started with some of the more expensive ones:
    1893 P (AU range)
    1899 P (MS 62 but hoping for 63, range)
    1901 P (AU range)
    and:
1884 S (AU, i think its cleaned but it could go both ways, either way i want it certified)
    1882 CC (MS63 range?)
As of yesterday, 11:23 A.M. the package was delivered to NGC....
We will see what happens in about a month, i am hoping to get at least what my guesses were...maybe better!
If the 84-S comes back cleaned i will not be surprised but i was told by a trusted professional Numismatist, it has a good chance at grading. Fingers crossed!
    Thanks for stopping by,
    Nick

I am still new at this, compared to alot of you guys/gals, so bare with me....
I have seen alot of certified AU Morgans from the 1884-S series. Mainly because i have been researching to see if i need to certify my coin, see prior post, or buy an already certified one for my Morgan Date set.
Anyway, what exactly do TPG's look for in different levels of AU?
I only ask this because i have seen some AU58's that look no better then my 50's. I have also seen some 53's or 55's that easily look 58! Someone help me out.....
Following this are two pics of exaples of what i mean
The first one is an NGC certified 58 that looks not even good enough to be 50, IMO. then a PCGS 55 in the next that only grades 55 and looks WAY better then the 58.
I am not directing this towards NGC, it just happens to be the two examples i picked out, I have found both sides of the spectrum for both TPG's...

    i need some expert opinions....
I have been having an issue with an 1884-S Morgan Dollar I bought about 5 years ago before i even started collecting coins!
Anyway, i bought this coin a while back for 45 dollars. The guy who sold it to me was going out of business and needed to push his stuff out the door. At the time i didne even realize it was a semi-key date, nor did i think it was AU. I just thought it was COOL!
My issue is i have been thinking about getting it certified but i am afraid it has been cleaned. I took it to two different dealers. Both are well respected. One said it would grade, the other said it would grade, then changed his mind and said 50-50 chance of coming back in a purple lable.
What do you guys think.....Pics are coming right now for those reading this before i could add them....

    i could use some expertise
I was looking through my Morgans and i am starting to learn about the different VAM varieties.
    This is an 1880 P.
Notice the lines on each side of the eagle along the branches...What are these lines? Possible VAM variety?
IF so, which one? I cant find it on VAMWORLD
    Thanks all!

helps make up for the disappointment last week
i was soo upset last week about the fiasco with the 25th Anniversary ASE sets. i didnt end up getting my set for my baby girl... AT least i received my new addition to my Morgan dollar date set, "NIcks's San Fran Cuties."
I won it off ebay, for way less than FMV.
Check it out: 1887-S NGC MS63
This helped ease the sting a little bit from last week

this is insane! i would rather give it all up!
I thought the mint limited only 5 sets per household! i saw a guy on e-bay who says he has 20 sets coming and is selling them at $800 a piece!!!! That is BULL S...!!!!!
I cant even get 1 set for my damn kid! I am seriously considering giving this up! forget about all of you slimy, wannabe coin dealers who are just trying to make a buck! This really makes me sick! It makes me sick that im letting myself get soo worked up over this!
8 HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A SET YOU JUST PAID 3 FOR!!! I cant wait until KARMA comes back on the ones doing this!
I apologize to all the honest coin dealer/collectors who read this....

So 2011 is the year my daughter was born. I had been trying to get on the mint site catalogue since noon and have been unsuccessful. Now I finally get there and its on backorder! I knew it was going to go quick but geez!
If anyone has bought more than 1 set and is willing to sell one when they come in please PM me! I would like to buy a set in original mint package if possible.
PLEASE will someone do me this huge favor?

    1886 S
I finally found an 1886 S Morgan dollar at a great price.
It seams like these semi key San Fran dollars all pull a premium. I may be wrong. I finally picked this one up at well under FMV. I just need a few more of the semi keys, most of the commons, but im not worried about these now since they are really easy to find and are not in such a demand. Im actually having fun selling my raw coins and buying certified morgans for my competitive set.
Im actually thinking about re-starting my Philly set with certified coins and having a competitve set for that. Only problem is do i sell my raws to buy certified, or try and have them certified? Im afraid of paying the fees and having some come back "details." i guess thats the price i pay for not buying certified from day 1

    First Certified Morgan
I have seen the Light! I finally gave up on my local coin shop here because he doesnt really sell certified Morgans, not a good selection at least. It seemed like everytime i bought a raw Morgan i would have something pointed out to me that i couldnt see. I was getting tired of it! Especially after my most recent coin i bought, some "red flags" had been brought to my attention, and when i brought it to HIS attention, HE TOLD ME I WAS BEING PARANOID! Then he wouldnt even let me exchange it! SOmething fishy going on if you ask me...
So im only buying certified coins from now on!
Anyway, i started my SAN FRAN Morgan date set on the registry with the 1889 MS62. A nice first piece to a long set.
So check me out guys...BTW i am just starting to learn how to use the competitive sets so if my pics didnt come up let me know. I threw up some pics of a couple of my wheaties too
Take a look at my comp set

picked up a new one for my Philly set
I went to visit my local coin dealer with whom i have been doing business since day one. He had a 1901 P Morgan dollar on his shelf that i had to have. I looked this thing up and down for some reason NOT to buy it.
Well after negotiations, i was able to pick it up for a great price!
As some of you may know, i only have a few years in this hobby, so my eye for spotting problem coins has not developed well. I believe it looks good...The surface looks kind of shiny to me, but im not educated enough to know if its been tampered with..
Tell me what you think, please be honest! I need non-bias opnions...

my son was born in 2009
basically, my son was born in '09. i decided to get him the 2009 silver eagle dollar set. How many diffrent ones are there? and was there a proof? i can only seem to find this "overstrike" something or other....info?
or if anyone has the entire collection of '09's they want to sell?
As i undrstand it, the silver eagles have a proof, uncirculated and a bullion coin. i know what a proof is, but whats the difference between the UNC and the bullion? I dont know the ASE series very well...
    thanks all!

i have an AU details graded 1916 D mercury dime, by NGC.
it was suggested to me i get it restored. Is this something that is frowned upon? i really need some guidance because i DO think it would bring this coin back to life, if done by the right person. any suggestion? is restoration out of the question? good idea? picture enclosed...

    1899 S Morgan
I started my new San Fran, Morgan Date set. I really want to try and make it an XF and up set. I may have to give a little on that goal with the '93.
This is my first addition, besides the '84 which i bought a long time ago on a fluke for XF money.
i bought it for $18 under FMV so im off to a good start...
A couple dings around cheek and nose, but i think, a solid piece.
Exactly what i was looking for.
