Something corrosive created the pits in the surface. I'm thinking it's all corrosion.

The missing letters are INCUSE, not raised, so the debris fill idea goes away. On the die, those letters have been ABRADED OFF, not FILLED.

When I am “scanning” coins leaning over a table, at a show or an auction, if a coin is holed, I stop looking at it IMMEDIATELY. I don’t even CARE what its date or history is. I’m out.

I won't buy a holed coin. Even rare coins with problems can be tough to sell. Not that many folks care to buy them. I do own a few medals that are holed.

Blue Ribbon was a great product but I understand why it was banned. I'm thinking that was 30 something years ago. I still have half a bottle of the original. They came out with a new version but I can't remember using it.

Sorry Mike, ALL physical contact leaves marks. ALL of it! I have no Q-tips in my tool kit, just bottles.

Ask yourself this. Why does nail polish remover have such a nice smell? That's not the acetone you are smelling. The acetone may be 100% but there are other things added to it.

No. Not for you. I won't teach people like you that have little understanding of the topic.

I have seen a thoroughly moistened cotton swab leave hairline scratches on a proof coin even if lightly applied. I don't recommend it for any piece of significant value.
The use of acetone, a solvent that dissolves or loosens surface dirt or other contamination from a coin isn't what is commonly referred as "cleaning", all of which is improper.  In the numismatic context, "cleaning" refers to any abrasive or chemical process that physically or chemically changes the coin's surface as opposed to something like acetone that removes contaminants that haven't chemically bonded with the coin metal and become part of the coin itself.

Acetone is a great product but nail polish remover is not a good idea.
The method shown by the OP is not the proper way to use acetone.
It's one of the worst methods I have ever seen anyone post. Don't try it using that method.

Not a chance someone will ever pay you that. The coin you posted has very little value.

1859-S Liberty Seated half dollar, PCGS graded XF 40. This coin appears to me to have Ch. XF-AU details but to have been net graded due to a light "cleaning".

Since I am a certified “quality snob” when it comes to coins, I’m always up for looking at nicer coins. But then, there’s the “other thing”. There are exactly TWO (2) known 1982-D small date bronze cents in existence. Two. Now you’re certainly free to imagine you are so meritorious that you just need to look hard enough for long enough and you’ll find number three. But the real mystery is why there were ever ANY of them. There should not be any. Each of the existing two make it LESS LIKELY a third will ever be found.

I won't be buying more gold or silver. For me it's too high but I'm sure it would turn out good, long term. My problem is my age. Anything long term is not very interesting to me.

What I find that's idiotic is you being rude and insulting others over what they enjoy collecting. That's not what the ANA teaches and you know it. Nobody said anything about ignoring basic standards but no two collectors have the same standards. Some collect from pocket change and others only collect high end coins. There is nothing wrong with either.
My heirs will not have any problem with my collection. They understand the hobby and will have all the information they will need to take proper actions. It's all about good record keeping and planning.

It's not my place to tell others what and how to collect. Just have fun and do what you enjoy.
