  1. Hey, Jackson. Nice "ship" additions! keep those pictures coming.

My latest addition to my music collection is attached. It came yesterday. Franz Schubert was another of those long haired classical composer/pee-an-o players from the 1800's. I'm not sure what link he had with the Isle of Man, but I guess that what makes the collecting interesting. It's kind of like Richard Wagner and Tonga. Why Tonga issues a Wagner coin (sadly, the favorite composer of Hitler) makes no sense either...and that's what makes it fun. Still looking for the Tonga coin, but this Isle of Man coin is yet another off the ever GROWING list of "needs". Apparently, many countries have figured out that there are a lot of suckers (ooooops...I mean collectors) of music related coins. I just found listings for about 1/2 dozen recent issues for the Sydney, Australia Opera House. BUMMER! I'll never finish THIS set!!

  2. Good evenin', Yarn.

No, I certainly don't WANT to ignore the music medals. They are on my "project list" for my next life...unless I come back as a squid or something....I actually started my VERY mini collection when my wife and I visited Rome. I stumbled into the shop of a minter of gorgeous, large bronze and silver medals with a variety of themes, including composers. I could only afford 1 back then when we were teaching in Belgrade, but I kick myself frequently for not bringing more Yugoslav dinars (or U.S. dollars) on that Rome trip. Those medals were gorgeous (and dollars were sought after commodities...goodness how times change)!

From time to time I check out e-Bay and truly, there are so many beautiful music related medals there, many far more artistic that the coins in my music collection. But....next life.

Your medal is super. I believe the music on it is from the first movement of Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony"...which eventually got finished by one of Schubert's students. Poor Schubert, had rather poor timing when he croaked before finishing the work...

Then another respondant suggested Music Condor tokens. I have been doing a casual search as Handel, as in George Frederic Handel of "Hallalujah" fame appears on some. Another column in the next life list.

  3. Gee...not much activity here of late so I figured I would bore you with another "music related" coin. This arrived from China yesterday. I have made major strides in the past month or so, with additions of approximately 20 new coins to the music collection. Of course, all of this prompted an order for more Eagle holders and pages and I had to graduate to 2 notebooks instead of the original 1. Now the hunting begins in earnest for some more of the harder to find pieces.

For you Early British collectors...Heritage has a few pieces in their current online auction that are worth taking a look at. HRCG.com.

  4. Having gone through many means of housing non certified coins, I have become a great fan of Eagle 2x2 rigid plastic holders and the pages that they slide in to. I've tried regular cardboard 2x2's, (gee...I wonder what ever happened to the colored ones...blues, green, pink..I'll bet THAT dates me), self sealing 2x2's with the adheasive, flips, Cointains, foam rings, Whitman plastic and so on, but while results have been generally quite good, I am a convert to the Eagle line of holders. If I was starting over, I use these from day 1. A bit pricy, but I think they are the best thing I've found.

  5. Far from as super as many of the posts here, but these coins just arrived yesterday and will be added to the ole' trusty Music Coin collection.

The first is an olympic coin (kind of a stretch to include in a music coin set) except that the runners are "jumping over" the Sydney Opera House.

The second commemorates the reopening of the Berg Theater and Opera Building. I wouldn't have known about this issue except it appears on the cover of 2008 Standard Catalog 2001-date. Sorry the scans are through holders...I'm kinda' a klutz when it comes to handling Proofs.

  6. Hey, Rey!! Nice talkin' to you again.

Well, my 1908 dime is not a proof, but this overdate/repunched thing is really fascinating. But then again...I find almost anything in the hobby fascinating...except the slightly oozy greenish layer of PVC I found today on 2 Swiss silver 5 franc coins. The are common and only worth melt...but how DARE PVC be alive and well in my mystery box!

Your thoughts on regular and specimen Swiss silver pieces makes sense. I found a small bunch of nice 1/2, 1, 2 and 5 franc pieces today (no PVC on THESE puppies) all common dates but I doubt that there are any "specimens" in the lot.

    Be well.

  7. Good evening, guys.

Though I am not a Barber collector specifically (I do U.S. type and some foreign stuff) I thought I would post my Barber dime. I have a quarter and half too, but this is the neatest of the 3. I have it marked "overdate"...but maybe it's a repunched date, because something is definitely going on inside the lower loop of the 8. I see no specific mention of this variety in "Cherrypickers", but there appear to be no shortage of messed dates in 1908.

  8. Good morning, Yarm

The God Save the King medal is beautiful. The musical notation is actually accurate. Kind of clever. several composer coins, mainly from Europe also have fragments of well known compositions on them. If there is any interest here, I'll dig around and see what I come up with for posting.

Have a great day and thanks for sharing.
