  1. I am attaching a scan of 5 of my favorite new additions to the music coin set. The first is Boris Hristoff of Bulgaria. He was a famous Bass Opera singer. Next, Robert Marley of Jamaica, Reggae music...not my thing...but talented man and very popular, 3rd Sergi Rachmaninoff, one of my favorite Russian composers, 4th, Peter Ilich Tchaikovski, another well loved Russian Composer (Nutcracker Suite for example) and 5, the National Anthem of Transnistria. I had to look up Transnistria...but it really...sort of...is a country.

I have my 5 NGC submissions I haven't used yet...I think these will be the 5 selections to send in. I THINK they will accept gold on the "free" submission with membership coupon.

I really like the nice simple designs of the Finnish coins (prior post).

  2. Way to go there, Physics!!

I won 4 more music coins in the past 3 days as "make an offer" on e-Bay. Will post when they come in. Israel, Andorra, Poland, Bulgaria, and just got an e-mail that a 2 coin Egypt set (Abdul Halim Hafiz 1 and 5 pound set offer was accepted...he was a famous Egyptian singer) so that's 6, plus several others I am waiting for. Definitely going to need another notebook and some more Eagle holders and pages! And...I keep finding MORE that I have missed in the past...not to mention new issues...I have a "looking for" list of about 40 pieces. That darned Wagner coin from Tonga is driving me nuts. I must be on 10 want lists.

I hope I'll have a chance to show this set off sometime. If I had a zillion $, I'd do the NGC competitive set thing...but I'll never be able to afford all THOSE slabs! Oh well, I'm having a blast while not breaking the bank.

  3. Hi, Guys. RI AL here.

I have been derelict in posting new acquisitions of late but the Music Coin collection has really taken off. I have gotten back into it bigtime and have found so many pieces that I didn't know about, and am bombarded by e-mailings and snail mail with new issues. I have added 28 pieces (mostly new or recent mintings but some older "missed" coins as well) in the past 2 months and have 4 more coming and bids on a few others. I am again "enjoying the thrill of the hunt" since I called a moratorium on my U.S. type set. (Hopefully this will come to an end at some point but I am enjoying the heck out of the music coin hunting and they are so much more affordable.) Anyway, I have scanned a few of my favorites to share. These are all recent or current issues except for the Egypt coin commemorating the Opera Aida, which was minted in 1987. My research has created a stack of "coins needed" sheets...there must be 50 pieces out there that I am looking for or will order at some point. Apparently there is a series of "World's Smallest Gold Coins", many of which commemorate composers. I have 3, but keep getting outbid on a Mozart piece from Mongolia.

Anyway, large scans below. The coins pictured are from Russia, Poland, 1 from the Ukraine and the AIDA coin from Egypt.

Hope everyone is well and having much success in your collecting!

Bartlesvilleok, If you have a minute sometime, I sure would like to know the history of this piece! Thanks.

Dont know a lot about the history. It is a Judd 1769

The Judd 10th edition says the following

Obverse : Charles E Barber's design. At the center is a shield, across which is a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, incused. Crossed poles behind support a liberty cap and an eagle. E PLURIBUS UNUM above. 1896 below, seven stars left, six right, all within a circle of dots.

Reverse: Olive wreath enclosing 1 CENT. Around the boarder inside a circle of dots is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Thanks for the information. I wasn't even aware that aluminum was "available" 113 years ago. I really like the design. I wonder why it was rejected.

  5. What an amazing little "time capsule" your coin is!!! It 's just so neat thinking about what was going on in the world when this coin was "born",

Regarding the pongs, I think I have to agree that they are not my favorite aspect of the entire presentation, In fact, I think they kind of detract. In any event, you have a really neat piece of history protected for future generations to enjoy.

    Nice coin!!! RI AL

  6. Sorry about the scans, guys, tried several settings...but here is my Teletrade win from last week. There is some gold toning that doesn't show up in the crappy scans, as well as a couple of neat die breaks.

A scanning question for the scanning impaired...as you increase the number of DPI's, should the images get sharper? I can't quite figure out why my images look like they are on the other side of a foggy window... :(

I just checked back several pages here and am so impressed with the BEAUTIFUL stuff you guys come up with!!!

  7. js30225. I am looking at a picture of the Pope 2001 Proof in the "World Coins" catalog and I see no evidence of obvious doubling on the reverse. Interestingly, there are no mintage statistics for the coin listed, so it would be interesting to know how many your seller bought, if he bought nearly all of them. As far as value, in my humble opinion, I believe that you may have an interesting error, but I would imagine that the market for your coin would be very small, requiring a very specialized collector indeed. A fun piece to own, but I don't think it is a rare treasure. :(

  8. Please excuse the poor quality of the picture...this is the best of several attempts of my "latest acquisition". For some reason, I just can't get the picture to be smaller when I post it though I have "resized it" on Photobucket. Can anyone help me with this??

This set was issued in 2004 and the coins are Euro Pattern coins. Though difficult to tell, the obverses feature Frederic Chopin (pianist/composer) as the bottom 3 copper coins, Nicolaus Copernicus (astronomy) and the top 3 brass coins. The center 3 coins feature Pope Paul ll.

Again...my apologies for the poor picture. RI AL
