Indian Head cent sparks interest

Dear Journal & Friends,

I have often tried, without success, to get my son interested in coin collecting. Sadly he took the grandchild to see his in-laws in Washington but we had other family visiting from California with us for the holiday. As it happened, my nephew asked me about coin collecting. Well, I was so pleased and surprised I can't tell you ,we talked for hours about collecting coins. As we got more into it his brother was drawn into our conversation and we all huddled around the dining room table and talked late into the evening. I used the society website to show them my collection and they enjoyed the slideshows. So I took the chance and pulled out my raw collection, this usually sends them running for the exits. I have these coins in flips and some in individual hard plastic holders or the mint packaging. We went thru the coins, franklins, eagles, commemoratives, quarters, silver dollars etc. When we got to the Indian head cents my eldest nephew let out a gasp. What is that, he asked? I have a small collection of raw Indian Head cents from the civil war years and 1890-1909 some have wonderful toning. Neither had ever seen one and they were both fascinated so I gave them both one minted 100 years before their birth dates, a 1892 & 1894 as mementos of their visit.

They were thrilled with the coins and I loved watching them look over the details under the loupe and answered their questions, we had great fun. This is how I imagined enjoying coins with my son, besides the occasional journal entry or comment to the boards I don't have the opportunity to share my love of coins with many so I really enjoyed this Thanksgiving with my nephews. So, I think I gave my older nephew the bug for Indian Head cents, but time will tell.

Well, all the best wishes for a safe holiday season to you all, Happy Collecting!

Larry
