So I got my large submission of coins that included 3 that needed "Conservation". Overall I'm pleased at the results because most of these coins were purchased during the pandemic. It is truly hard to determine a coin based on pictures and description, fortunately many online dealers are willing to help by sending MANY pictures to you. But then you have one that slips through that makes you go......."Damn!! Why didn't I see that?!?"

Case in point is my Mayflower Reverse Proof ( 2020PM BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS S$1 The Mayflower Voyage 400th Anniversary | NGC (ngccoin.com) that had a "Dent" in the coin's rim..... something I didn't see..... I would have NEVER thought it would get a rating of "DETAILS" because this coin came from the mint directly (Wouldn't that be considered an error?!?) But it did, so now I will have to send another in to be rated.

Then I had 3 coins recommended for CONSERVATION..... with past experience I said "Go Ahead".... and those those 3 coins are done and one became "Top Pop".... and that one came from the mint directly!! WHAT DID POBJOY DO WRONG?!? May be we'll never know!

Now that all my winnings have been burned up, now I have coins I have to decide to send in!  I have some Solomon Islands non-silver or silver plated coins to send in for this category:

Solomon Proof

AND..... I have coins to finish and expand the Solomon Silver Proofs..... with coins still missing LOL

Oh the headaches!

Unfortunately a rim dent is a rim dent, no matter where or when it occurred and NGC has only your word for that. But PMD is still PMD, with "mint" in this case meaning striking, not the building.

I just prepared and mailed off a 13 coin submission yesterday. It would have been 14 had I not decided to pull one of the coins out of the submission. The rim of that coin has a couple of shiny spots. Those spots led me to believe that at one time this coin may have been mounted in jewelry. Thinking to myself that this coin was not necessary to my collection I reasoned, why waste my prize money on the chance it will not receive a full grade? Now I'll probably sell the coin raw on e-bay. Like you I have been burned in the past with disappointing results. My choice then is to learn from my previous failures or continue to spend money unnecessarily. Being burned comes with the territory. Learning from our mistakes is the only way to mitigate future disappointments. May your future submissions only make you smile! Gary

This has been my reaction to pretty much every one of my submissions to NGC.   I even created a custom set (Coins I have had graded) to track my expectations vs the results.  The coins in the set are listed chronologically, starting with my very first submission.  I think my eye has gotten better over the years, but there are still the highs of a grade better than anticipated and the lows of a details grade.  Despite my best efforts, some hairlined coins are still seem to sneak through.  I'm in the process of prepping 40 coins for submission, and I'm sure there will be some highs and lows in this batch as well.  They will be added to the the end of my custom set when I get them back.

Something you should keep in mind.  Every year at the annual ANA World's Fair of Money, NGC offers one or more "Ask the Expert" sessions where Mark Salzberg will review a few of your coins.  They could be coins you are planning to submit or coins that you've purchased or had graded.  I've gotten several significant upgrades as a result of those sessions.  It is often the best 10 minutes of the entire show.

Every submission is a learning experience.  Best of luck with your future submissions.

Dear ChrisInJesup,

First, thank you for your service to me and everyone in the country.

This is my Mint to TPG story.  I have very mixed emotions about submitting coins from the Mint.  I dutifully collected each first spouse proof as it came out from the Mint.  I waited I had the complete collection (prior to the Barbara Bush coin) and hand carried the coins to Florida to the FUN show.  That was 41 coins, amounting to 20.5 ounces with a price at the time of roughly$1300 per ounce for a total value of roughly $53,000.  My thought was without much money on the line I submitted the coins on the first day of the show for "show grading" at full price. Starting with Washington and ending with Regan I took each capsule and placed it in in a flip, then placed the flips in chronologic order, made a sticker for each flip with a label maker and filled out two sheets with each coin ins proper order.  (you know what is coming) Sooooo...

1) On the final day of the show no coins and the home office (just miles away closed) and no answer as to where they were or why I would not get what I paid for.

2) I finally gave up and flew home and awaited the outcome, better correct that today, but...

3) On Monday they had found the coins and were doing "expedited" grading (NO REFUND ON THE SHOW GRADEING FEE…)

4) When I got the coins late that week (quick but not "walk through" either) they were mostly 70's but...

5) They were all out of order with some random sequence slab numbers and...

6) Seven (7) coins were tagged with a post-it notes saying conservation recommended on a PR-69.  So I think conservation + 69 = 70. But...

7) after paying for "show grading", and delivering the coins, waiting to get them back, following their recommendations for conservation, 3 out of 7 upgraded to 70.

8) With the current Mint management quality control process, it was hard for me to understand how a Mint sealed coin could need conservation much less 7 out of 41.  And then, what is the point of conserving a gold coin (it won’t Corrode) if they come back in the same grade looking the same.  I have been at this for 53 years and I'm no David Vagi but come on...

To steal and bastardize a quote from Winston Churchill:  NGC is the worst third party grading service EXCEPT FOR ALL THE REST!

Am I whining, yeah, I am.  But we are in to coins because they scratch some little pedantic itch we have, the need to set things in order, to completion with the ever elusive, in fact unattainable, goal of perfection.  But we try and that is what makes me whine.   For those who might have interest here is my "Spouse set."  All issues are represented with my photos of and commentary on each First Lady, I hope you enjoy:  https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/competitive-sets/189141/

I do believe that Mark Salzberg is the finest person in the hobby, business and or obsession we love.  He unlike Mr. Hall really gets why we do what we do.

John,

I appreciate that you appreciate my service to the country. The best way to thank a Vet, is not allow funding cuts to the VA and robbing the DOD budget. LOTS of money was taken from the DOD to build "The Wall" that soldiers could have used for infrastructure work that is badly needed on military bases. VA funding hasn't kept up with its usage.... it actually was redirected to the private sector for "FOR PROFIT" clinics. I don't use the VA as I have medical insurance... and would let my Brother/Sister in Arms have the benefit of using those service without me taking space. That's how I'm thanking them in a small part. But again, thank you for recognizing our service!

I hear you John. I haven't had a bad thing to say...... but I will mentioned that with ALL the coins I sent in (either through NCS or NGC), I had one coin that didn't improve in rating. Now saying that, I will say that the rest did move up one or 2 levels.... but the one that didn't... looks so much better than it went in! Conservation sometimes exposes a problem that was covered.

Now I do plan to send some in to NCS here in the future and they will be challenges based on what they say they can do. I plan to document that group of coins since it has been requested.... some Schillings, "odds and ends" and a rare BVI coin. I will share when the results are completed.

As a side note: I am so JEALOUS of your 1st Lady collection!! The only first lady I have is Jaqueline Kennedy's coin..... but that's because I'm hooked to the Chamelot story. I should have got the NON-1st-Lady coins from the bachelor Presidents LOL.
