A lot of gold came out of California during the pre-civil war era (1848 when gold was discovered until 1861 when the civil war started).

PerryHall, this is correct about Califonia gold, but prior to the discovery there in 1848, North Carolina was the source of our nations gold, begining in 1790.

Ans: Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina, supplied most of the nation's gold from 1790 to 1840.

At one time Rutherford County and Rutherfordton were the center of gold production within the United States. Rutherfordton owns the distinction of operating the only private gold mint ever operated in the southeastern United States. This distinction existed from 1790's to 1840's. Also, Rutherfordton owns the distinction of being the first mint in the nation to coin a gold dollar. This mint was operated by two skilled German metallurgists, Christopher Bechtler, Sr. and his son, Augustus Bechtler. The county has in its possession today, a few of the coins minted by the Bechtlers. It also has a gold plated pistol made by the Bechtlers. Gold mining in the county led to an increase in population.
