Please comment, the 'look', grade (eac or tpg), anything +/-

oh...please excuse my picture taking, i don't know where those white spots are coming from, but i just don't have it in me right now to work on it. also, pics are entirely unretouched, lightened, darkened or otherwise.

It probably has a great deal to do with the picture, but the coin looks to be re-colored. The coin has Mint State sharpness, but the surfaces look "dead" to me. If you turn this piece in the light, you should see mint luster (a.k.a. flow lines if the the piece is Mint State or higher end AU). Mint State toned copper coins should have mint luster, but they don't need to have any red color. A perfect even brown is a great look, and often does not get the credit it deserves on coppers that more than 160 years old.

Looks like a die misalignment led to strike weakness in the top half of the obverse and bottom half of the reverse. I don't see any wear in the picture.

Nice C-1 Mike. I can see what Bill is speaking of, but I also think that the photo is not proper to judge recoloring by, in this particular case. It seems as probable that the coin still has some lightness in protected areas from its original surfaces. Just can't tell without the coin in-hand. I love the planchet and the cleanness of the surfaces. Looks like a very worthy piece. I'd call it an AU50 A, EAC. thumbsup2.gif

I agree with the EAC grade (my version of EAC is take the TPG grade - 3 = EAC)

but it grades a PCGS 53. Bill, I can see your point as to whether this coin has been recolored or something like that, also, some of those white spots are ON the coin. I'm not having an easy time figuring this coin out. Hoot, I appreciate your understanding of this.

I have one that looks exactly the same (an 1828, there is a post around here somewhere from a couple of months ago). Hard to take a proper pic of a copper and capture what it really looks like in hand, although a quick crack of the slab and some of the problems go away... wink.gif
