Heritage's photos...which I used to dislike immensely...allow you to lighten or darken and if taken with good enough focus, really let you see the areas you question, on the coin, with great magnification.

 

I find the photos by the other auction firms potentially entirely misleading.

 

How would you rank them? Best to Worst?

I wish I could weigh in on all the other auction houses, but I mainly have experience with Heritage and have not seen too much of the others. I do know that those Heritage photos lately seem even bigger than ever! Even with those massive photos, you need to know what to look for and that takes practice. And to be able to pick out luster on a "Bustie" is impossible to do no matter how big their pic is.

 

And I have seen many super-crappy photos on Heritage, mainly on smaller-ticket items (see my post on the 1838 Large Cent from a week or two ago).
