Thanks for the kind input.

Souders mentions that there is at least one believer, and it looks like he has it under strong consideration at this point, that the square base 1820/19 overdate is really an 1820/19/18. Any thoughts?

I don’t recall any mention of that in Overton although I don’t have the book in front of me to confirm that. I think two things: First that seems like a lot of use of the die for it to be in such good condition. Secondly, it does seem plausible because they clearly tried to get as much use out of each die as possible. So I have incongruent thoughts of the subject. confused-smiley-013.gif

Correction – there is mention of the 20 over 18 in the Overton book. It is only for 101 & 101.a, not 102. It just mentions in passing that the underlying 9 is sometimes mistaken for an 8, particularly in 101.a where the “thin line showing the bottom loop of 9 inside 0 is now disappearing leaving the side projections that are sometimes mistaken for an 8.”

From the pictures I have, I can’t make any guess myself. I just wanted to make that correction for anyone reading this thread.

Winston,

One thing to keep in mind as to the overdates in the bust half series...None of the capped bust overdates were used in the original years. They all were new dies when they were overdated and used. Only in the case of the draped bust 1806/5 Overton 104 was a previously used die restamped with a new date.

As for the 1820/19 O-101 I can understand why when looking at later die states one might think that it was an 8 rather than a 9, but looking at earlier strikes the tail of a 9 clearly shows below the 0.

I wasn't happy with my curled base 1820, forfeited the money I was going to spend on an 1807 and bought this instead (photo courtesy of Islandcoins):
