Signatures forged on checks, 6 testify

Defense admits it, but denies crime

 

 

The prosecution's handwriting expert, David Hall, testifies about forged check signatures yesterday in the Tom Noe trial in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

One by one, they went to the witness stand and told their own personal Tom Noe story. How they met him in middle school, at high school football games, or in the political world.

 

Most said nice things about the former coin dealer and GOP fund-raiser, calling him friendly, nice, even wonderful.

 

And each admitted that their signatures were forged on checks he had written to them.

 

"I was utterly uninvolved in this transaction," said Doug Donnell, a Michigan lawyer who grew up with Noe in Wood County, referring to one of the checks.

 

Prosecutors say Noe wrote checks from his business account to several people, endorsed the checks by signing their names to the backs of each one, and then deposited the checks into his personal account.

 

Yesterday, six people testified that they never signed the checks prosecutors showed them, all of which had been deposited into Noe's personal account. Prosecutors say the forgeries allowed Noe to avoid income taxes.

 

In a surprising admission, John Mitchell, one of Noe's attorneys, acknowledged that his client endorsed the checks. During cross-examination of the prosecution's handwriting expert, Mr. Mitchell began by telling David Hall that his analysis was correct.
