An 1817/3 Bustie

Recent addition, I've been looking for one for awhile and was impressed with this coin, so I bought it. I'm becoming less and less patient in taking pics as the years go on, but here's my attempt:

I like that coin a lot!

Overdates rule! Though I think I prefer the 1824/various. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif This one is clearer, though.

Thanks for sharing!!

While the 24 over Various dates is cool this one is much better! Followed by the 41/42 Merc.

Please…1817/4 is the coin that lured Overton into the CBH series + it’s R7. Come on, that’s hard to beat. Gimme something better than that confused-smiley-013.gif

I have to say, I'd prefer and 1817/4 over any of them any time!!!

Souders projects the mintage of the 1817/3 at about 93,000 with 800-1000 extant.

I see a lot more 1815/2's for auction or sale by dealers than the 1817/3 but I don't know if this is a reflection of the numbers extant or not. Whatever the case, I've found it almost impossible to find with a decent strike e.g., the eagle's head. James has a nice on on his site, if it's still there (he had two the last time I looked and one of them had a pretty darn good strike).

There are only 7 extant for the 1817/4 I believe. Apparently one of those is a PCGS AU50, but the others range from a G6 to a VF25. I'll take the G6 even!!!!

If you are talking about dollar value then of course the 1817/4 is worth more, and it may have been special to Al Overton, too. However, the underdigit is not completely visible, is tough to see on low grade coins and is simply not a coin that most folks can aspire to own. The 1817/3, though, has a massively obvious underdigit that appears to have had no attempt made to have been removed, is from a die produced four years earlier than the eventual release date and is a coin that most collectors of the CBH series can realistically acquire at some point.

Coolness Advantage: 1817/3 thumbsup2.gif

Okay I was just saying…No argument on the visibility of the underdigit or the ability to acquire…I was just thinking that the 1817/4 is largely responsible for all the Overton varieties of the CBH series. Had Overton not taken interest in the CBH series they may have been TomB.101 or MikeKing.101 now that really changes history.

It is hard to find an 1817/3 CBH, especially in a PCGS holder. You must have paid up plenty for it. Looks to be a very nice example of my favorite CBH overdate. thumbsup2.gif

That is an unusually nice 1817/3!!!!

I have a theory that, after the 1818/7, the 1817/3 is the most abused overdate of all Capped bust halves. I think that a huge percentage of both coins have been cleaned with sinister intent to get higher grades out of them, as they are such popular coins even with non-specialists. The overdates are blatantly obvious, making the coins highly desirable to collectors in general. Most times, examples of either of these varieties are washed out. Coins with good, original color of any kind are very scarce!

Here are a couple more examples (my apologies for the spam in the second example):

James, I was looking back at some old posts and didn't notice you put up the photo of your 1817/3, specifically the second one.

That is one of the nicest overdates I've seen. Beautiful coin.
