what happened to the die?

More than likely, it was the result of a grease-filled die. These can be quite common and don't ordinarily command a premium. Coincidentally, there was a Kennedy half posted on another thread that had almost everything except JFK obliterated in a similar fashion, but I can't recall which thread it was (somebody help me out, here!).
