what's the best cherrypickin guide

8 posts in this topic

i kinda just figured that all the varieties have already been picked out decades ago, so i never really "cherrypicked" too much. well just for something to do i went though a bag of mercs and found a 41 s/s.. then a sack of quats gave me a 39 d/s.. also found a '97 1 in neck indian, and the other day i found a 35 ddr buffalo.... cherrypickin still pays off i guess huh?

i've been using the cherrypickers guide v3, and was thinking about grabbing the v4... but what about the big breen book? what's the best, and most current pickin guide out there right now? i'm kinda hooked wink.gif

thanks

And if I may add a second part to the question, what is the deal with the Cherrypicker's Guide, Fourth Edition, Volume 2? Does anybody know? I bought Volume one a couple of years ago, and have been waiting for the second volume because I like the higher denominations better (especially the Franklin Half).

oh that's right... v4 has 2 parts, and they're both out now if i remember right... aren't they? i looked through the breen book today but it was an old edition, with a $75 price tag, but it was so thorough it made me wonder if the cherrypickers guide was even worth bothering with.,,,

should i spring for a newest version of breen, or get the v4's................... let's say i'm a cherry freak... what book must i have? i guess that's what it comes down to... this or that

C'pickers Guide is the best general variety attribution guide. There are books written for specific series, and quick Google searches or visits to your favorite virtual numismatic book stores should help you find what you need. If you're interested in Franklin 50c, for example, consider this book:

Specialists are also now publishing variety attribution guides in electronic format. For those who are interested, you might want to check out (1) the Shield Nickel Viewer page at Howard Spindel's Shield Nickel Website (and don't forget to read the review of the program grin.gif), and (2) Gerry Fortin's Liberty Seated Dime Web Book.

Collecting by variety is a wonderful challenge; and don't think for a minute that all varieties have been discovered. You might also want to consider a membership in CONECA. Have fun.

You might consider my book ...

Info on book

However, it only covers Lincoln cent varieties. I only have 12 copies left, so when there gone there gone. No more printing.

I wish you the best in your collecting endeavors.

(edited to add): Now 11 left. -- Scratch that -- 6 left.

I'm pretty sure Cherrypicker's 2 is still not out. I have not seen it anywhere. Wasn't there a lawsuit last year where a bunch of people who had already paid for it sued Fivaz and Stanton? And thanks, IGWT, I already have the Franklin book (bought it on Ebay from Wexler himself, who autographed it for me!)
