This is a public service announcement from Mike Meenderink coin collector extraordinaire and cat lover.

If you like a coin do not immediately disregard it if it is a details graded or "problem coin". Many times, these coins have very minor issues that do not get past the graders but you yourself would have a hard time even seeing it. Small scratches, rim dings, altered colors etc.. All detracting descriptors that many times exist on a nice looking coin. If the saying holds true that "you buy the coin not the grade" then it MUST be applied to details coins as well. Don't always ignore details coins they deserve love too especially old type coins. Also please consider rescuing an animal from your local shelter to assist you in your collecting.  ....Cheers!

To which I should like to add...

If you are not buying, in person, make sure you have seen the seller's policy on returns, whether it is within a reasonable do-able time-frame, and have read the reviews...

To me this is the really important thing when buying a problem coin. It's wise to walk away from ugly problem coins. I don't need a coin to straight grade to enjoy it.

NGC gave this one an "altered color" designation. I like it, and being a low mintage proof makes it even better to me....

But there is something I wanted to ask Mike:  Have you ever been tempted to try your magic potions on this chocolate brown example, going so far as decapsulating it, or did you feeling, in view of its age, composition and scarcity, it was too risky a proposition to undertake?

I would never remove any coin from a reputable TPG slab and mess with it. That is a NO -NO. The coin above would neither be improved or repaired in any way since mechanical damage such as a scratch is not repairable. Also, the coloring and surface of this coin are pretty nice. No need to mess with a coin like this in a slab or out. Selecting candidates for these processes is the MOST difficult part of the conservation process. Choosing the wrong pill shoots you out the back door of the MATRIX.
