See the following infographic to tell the difference between the large and small dates: Note especially the difference in distance between the "2" and the rim and the difference in size of the upper loop of the "8". If you're trying to find a 1982-D small date "copper", please note that only two are known. You would probably have a better chance of winning a major lottery prize than finding another one.
