wmmrjmmr
Anyone else actively collecting Franklin and Kennedy half specimens with VEDS (very early die state) qualities?

CIII
Interesting. I am just starting to collect Franklin half dollars. I am not familiar with VEDS Franklin's but I would appreciate if you could maybe post a picture or two and show me. Is there a reference that you could recommend, or is that what you are trying to establish?
physics-fan3.14
This thread would probably see more results if you posted in the US coins forum - you have this listed in the marketplace. As for the coins... that 1956 is an incredibly harshly polished business strike coin. The 1952 shown in an earlier post is most likely a business strike coin which has been polished and possibly plated after it left the mint. Both of these coins are damaged... there is no secret, unknown die state shown on these coins. And, a VEDS (as you call it) is not an "undefined subtype" with unicorn characteristics. Its just an early die state. These are well understood, and graded appropriately. Edited May 7, 2023 by physics-fan3.14 Sandon
Sandon
I'm pretty sure, as @physics-fan3.14 posted while I was writing this reply, that the purportedly proof Franklin half dollars posted by the author aren't proofs at all but are circulation strikes that someone has heavily polished or plated to look like proofs! Note the less shiny areas between the letters on the 1956, the partly smoothed out marks and scratches on the devices and in the fields, and the weak details on all three coins. Such bogus items are frequently offered on ebay. Please also note that the Marketplace forum is for topics soliciting the sale or purchase of coins. If you're trying to get the chat board members' opinions on Franklin and Kennedy half dollars that exhibit very early die states, you would do better to post it in the "U.S., Foreign, and Ancient Coins" forum, or if you are a newer collector, on the "Newbie Coin Collecting Questions" forum. Proof Franklin half dollars of any die state generally have full bell lines, and those that are from early die states should also exhibit cameo contrast, like this 1956 Type II that NGC graded PF 68 cameo: Photos courtesy of Stacks Bowers Galleries. Actually, to me it looks like it might be a possible LDS (late die stage) early strike with reflective qualities - however I will never know because I did not make the purchase. The purchaser must believe it is really a Type 1 Proof. NOPE on a ROPE! Neither of these are even collectible coins. They are polished/damaged/ruined only. I’m not referring to Sandon’s 1956 pix. They’re fine. Edited May 9, 2023 by VKurtB
