First of all I want to apologize for the poor quality of the photos.

I received these photos from a friend who wanted to know if this 1944 Merc could be a DDO.  I couldn't find any info on a 1944 but I did find that there is a 1944 D DDO.

I'm thinking machine doubling...any opinions?

Thanks

While the doubling is significant, it appears to be strike doubling (a.k.a. machine doubling) caused by a die being loose in the press. (I say "appears to be" due to the low resolution of the photos, especially of the date.)  If it were die doubling, the two images would be at about the same level instead of one being shallower than the other or "shelf-like".
