Question on DD 1953 S Nickel 0

The coin appears Fine or Very Fine. All text seems very thick compared to all other Jefferson nickles I've ever seen [except for Monticello]. The face appears more lifted off. Were the 1953s nickels like this? Should I send it to NGC?

Though I haven't seen your coin, I would wager that it's appearance is probably the result of the poor quality control at the SF Mint during that period and circulation wear. The dies were used way too long, and this led to distortion of the peripheral design elements.
